She handled herself with such class on that question! She’s definitely really confident in herself because most people would deflect and never admit they were fired. ESPECIALLY famous celebrities who already think way too highly of themselves

Most celebrities would deflect the question, but not because they think too highly of themselves. It'd be because they're very careful of the potential for badmouthing anyone in the business, and under a lot of pressure to keep these things 'internal" as much as possible. Also, because the press tends to take stories like these and run them into massive inflations of what the original story was.

Wow, firing an Oscar winner is a big decision. I like Julianne admitting it hurt to be fired and being honest when actors often avoid telling the truth about what really happens in the business.

I can't really wrap my head around how this could happen. Julianne is a fantastic actress, she couldn't be directed to do something else? Or did she refuse to? She comes off as genuine and nice and I've never heard a bad word about her. I need answers people.

MisterChirp Julianne didn’t listen to the director which is a big no. She thought that she knew the character more than the director and ignored the director’s vision. Just because you won an Oscar doesn’t mean you’re a perfect actor

Someone with so much talent, acclaim and fame can still be hurt by not getting a job they really wanted. I think that’s just an important reminder, that even if you are a huge star, you can still go through something like that. Love her, she handled it beautifully.

Okay this is gotta be the first time hearing a public figure honestly say they were fired from something so recent? She handled herself really well too and express her pain over it without bashing neither the director nor her replacement. Love this woman.

Nicole fired her and dropped out of the movie too as the director. It was still in development stages. The producers Then later on, brought Marielle Heller and Melissa McCarthy on board and made the flick.

According to one of the producers, she fired a few days before the film was scheduled to go into production.

@@Starkardur I think so. I thought it was weird how little Melissa and Richard mentioned Nicole Holofcener during award season and couldn't stop singing praises about Marielle Heller. I understand that as the director she is way more involved but it really felt that Holofcener wasn't included at all but maybe that was a choice? She didn't pose with the cast and crew in any pictures.

Most actors would try and keep this a little quiet (just for the sake of decorum and out of respect for the other actress), but Julianne handled it really well! Sometimes this just happens in movies even with talented performers. Nicole Holofcener is an amazing filmmaker and what she and Melissa did with the character turned out to be fantastic.

I just love how open she was about getting fired. I don't think many actors would admit that so confidently, especially on her caliber, I wouldn't be comfortable taking about getting fired and I'm not even famous. that's why she's my favorite actress, no bullshit. love her

I respect her honesty. After all the fame and achievement she got, didn't make her feel embarassed telling that she was fired from a project. Like any regular jobs, sometimes we fail to deliver or got terminated. She's just being real and I admire her even more .

The screenwriter Nicole Holofcener fired her, not the director Marielle Heller. I think Marielle talked about it on the Director's roundtables by THR.

TV Writer here’s the deal she was the original director and she wrote the movie. she fired Julianne then decided to quit . The movie got a new director and a new lead in Melissa McCartney but still used her script.

Julianne Moore is a gifted and gorgeous actress and Melissa McCarthy is a vibrant screen personality and a talented comedienne BUT both are actually wrong for that role...Lee Israel was a tough Brooklyn Jewish broad and neither one of these ladies embodies that...if the movie had been made years ago, maybe Bette Midler or Anne Bancroft or perhaps even Geraldine Page could have done it...actually the person who really comes to mind is Jeannie Berlin

She was also fired not long ago by a turkish agency. She was suuposed to be in a promotional video for travel in Turkey. She acted sad instead of happy. They wanted her to look happy.

This reminds me of my parent's advice : 'Don't say to everyone you're fired. Say that you quit.' I, being brutally honest, ignore that advice. Yes, I know it will save my and my family's dignity. So what? Being fired is nothing new. In the age of social media now, lies are somehow easy to be found out. Other than that, I just don't want to feel bothered to cover lie with other lies. Gossip and news have expiry date anyway.

I believe Richard E Grant was also brought in as a 2nd choice for his character. I think another actor was slated to play that but was let go or left.

I believe Grant said on Graham Norton's show that Sam Rockwell had been cast in his role originally & I think another name was mentioned also. According to IMDB, it was Chris O'Dowd. So Grant was actually the 3rd choice.

I think some employers ABUSE their power and position to fire people who have the balls to have an opinion and a voice and speak up and stand up for their beliefs.
