Hello everyone, today I would like to propose that we spend the rest of the week engaged in a close reading of Alenka Zupančič’s book “The ethics of the real”, in which she lays out “a conceptual framework for an ethics which refuses to be an ethics based on the discourse of the master, but which equally refuses the unsatisfactory option of a (post)modern ethics based on the reduction of the ultimate horizon of the ethical to one’s own life.”
Or, how to live a life worth living?
Thanks for watching,
Julian

Zupancic (and you by extension) doing more for my mental health than most therapists I've ever come across. Or rather, the therapists were a 60% solution, and this is bringing it up to 85%

Beside "What is Sex", what are books of her that you recommend?

Authors can only be like signposts, clocks, symbols of meaning. But that meaning is observed through one's "own" intelligence. So one could say: Thank your "self", or rather, thank "God"! Obviously having these kind of people is inspiring, and makes the brotherly love stronger, knowing that there are people who ponder on these things and I am not special.

@@CollectionOfTheTimeless-ug4vq true! It took me a large amount of pondering time before I started to see that the signposts corresponded to the roads I had been on. I suppose Lacan would suggest that I thank my non-existent subject for yet moving me 😄 Whatever the language chosen, I agree that it is seeing that subjectivity in other objects that is most comforting. May many others come to that conclusion too.

@OP: Good to hear…! I noticed your thoughts about “percentage (of) solution”, and maybe that’s on of our mental traps? Therapy - if it’s actually good - should be more about a path, direction, social construct, time or method and less about the “goal”…? What we are, more than what we do? E.g. cognitive tools (therapy) are worthy first aids, but over time one grindingly questions every “thought”. There’s more to a mind than pure logic, facts or reasoning. Creativity, intuition or relations don’t reduce to a set solution, but emerge holistically from all the “details” over time. If unknown to you, maybe look up some of Iain McGilchrist’s talks i.e. here on YT? He (and many others) builds pretty good (and researched) narratives on this topic…

@@musiqtee yes I've heard some of his talks about the hemispheres. It was a bit impenetrable in terms of how he relates holistic experiences into distinct regions of the brain. It just didn't make much sense at first. There are clear examples where both sides of the brain are active during a "left-side" activity or a "right-side" activity., so it seemed like he was trying to have the best of both worlds (subjective and objective) without quite connecting the two. That's my intuition about it, but then....just how good is an intuition precisely? Yes the percentages are a bit silly. My 100% solution is my own, and my own based on my current experiences and memory. But therapy was only a piece of that. It's just so hard to communicate these things concisely with precision 🤷‍♂️

"Maslow's hierarchy of needs" basically. However my problem with this is that it can easily develop an assumption for oneself that 'inner liberation' is a gradual process.

Hello Julian, thank you for your work. I was wondering about what happened to your lecture on surplus enjoyment/subjective destitution, zizek´s book. I was following it but I think I lost the thread. See you in patreon and all the best from Berlin.

Would Zupančič or Zizek have different ethics if they were practicing psychoanalysts?
