Julie gives us her pure, no-nonsense singing talent that is absolutely top notch, yet so naturally done without the use of any changes in the way such a beautiful song has been written.

Fabulous !! Julie's control .pitch. diction and emotion are seldom seen on the music scene these days . She is top notch at her craft, and her performances and recordings through the years have all been stellar !! One of the greatest female vocalists ever!

Enough with the Streisand comparisons. Julie Budd is unique, stylistic and important. She is like Jack Jones- her voice is ideal and may not have captured number one ranking in the charts, but only because they are caught in between generational changes. What a magnificent talent- imagine at 15 years of age, who could do this live on Ed Sullivan? W o w.

She is practically doing a literal Streisand impersonation. It’s not a “comparison”, she has deliberately copied the nuances and style of Streisand, even down to her hand and body movements.

@@ATLJonathanH --They are both jews from Brooklyn...natural comparison.. Me thinks Barbra used her power to stifle this kids career..ps. did Julie "nuance" Streisand's face too ?

Fantastic performance! She's not given enough credit for such a talented n skillful entertainer. Her inflections, gesture n stage present are awesome ! Kudos to Ms Budd for her tremendous contributions. Think remembering seeing her name on the billboard in Las Vegas so many years ago. Kudos for vid. Looking forward to ur next one. Aloha from Hawaii

Harry Secombe originated this song in the musical "Pickwick", and it became his signature song. He also sang the song on one of the first color episodes of Sullivan in 1965 with the cast of the musical.

I would imagine that Julie practiced long hours in front of her mirror, while studying the original. She picked a great model to emulate. Regardless I have much respect for Julie Budd. My sister had one of her records and long ago I got to hear a few tracks. Nice work.

If there's any "comparison" to be made - which there isn't, as these three artists are immeasurable by their own accords - Julie Budd calls to mind Marilyn Michaels before Barbra Streisand
@JohnnyGNV
@JohnnyGNV 3 жыл бұрын
She was and IS great - I think unfortunately that she did sound and have mannerisms like Barbra Streisand that were a little too similar, but that's not her fault - we would always watch her and say she can't really help it if people are reminded of Barbra by her performances, it doesn't detract from how excellent her voice is -

I'm glad this clip finally surfaced. What a powerful and beautiful voice for a 15 year old girl. It's a shame her career didn't go further, possibly sabotaged by insiders at Columbia Records or people in the music industry who didn't want another singer around with a powerhouse voice. Julie Budd never had a hit record, gold or platinum records, or a Grammy Award; I don't think she's ever been nominated. It's very suspicious. Some of her mannerisms are similar to Streisand''s, but a person with a good ear for music can tell there's a big difference between their voices. Does anyone know what preceded this song with the women standing in the background?
@brockreynolds870

Those women were background singers, and Julie had just got done singing "California Shoe Shine Boy".... hopefully they will post that soon.

@@Michaelbos I find it rather peculiar that Julie Budd hasn't even had one hit record. Even Charlene is a one hit wonder plus many others. There were at least two songs that could have been hits from "Devil and Max Devlin ".

This song, in the musical in which it originated in the West End (and then brought to NYC) was to be sung by a campaigning politician. It is a highly cynical number, misinterpreted by every singer since it was popularized. It also wasn't swung, but sung straight up. He is promising you paradise IF YOU ELECT HIM! I have it in my repertoire and I do not sing it the way it was intended, such was as a parody of campaigning electioneers.

If she only continued her style at this young age instead of trying to be different later on, perhaps afraid to be compared to Barbra, her career would have been exceptional.

Meh, she has a good voice but she had to develop her own persona or otherwise she is thought of as a second hand Streisand, hate to be cruel but that is how the cookie crumbles in that business.
