This has been covered by hundreds of singers, but Julie's original recording is still the cleanest, heart-grabbing version.

Now you say you're lonely You cry the long night through Well, you can cry me a river Cry me a river I cried a river over you Now you say you're sorry For being so untrue Well, you can cry me a river Cry me a river I cried a river over you You drove me, nearly drove me, out of my head While you never shed a tear Remember, I remember, all that you said You told me love was too plebeian Told me you were through with me and Now you say you love me Well, just to prove that you do Come on and cry me a river Cry me a river I cried a river over you I cried a river over you I cried a river...over you...

3 people...one guitarist, one stand up bassist, one vocalist = Magic! Not 20 dancers, light shows and orchestras kids are used to today. This is real music, circa 1950's

Of the many and varied renditions of Cry Me A River, it is the late Julie London's warm, rich, heart-felt alto/tenor vocal, together with the paired-down guitar and bass accompaniment, which makes her 1955 recording the definitive version of this jazz standard - and a torch-song to boot.
@terri2000267 жыл бұрын
Many people believe that this is an Ella Fitzgerald song covered by Julie London. In actuality, it is Julie's song and always will be. She was the first one to sing it and record it "Cry Me a River" was originally written for Ella Fitzgerald to sing in the 1920s-set film, Pete Kelly's Blues released in 1955. The film by the way was being produced by Julie's ex-husband Jack Webb. The song was dropped and not used in the film, so Ella did not sing it first. Its first release was by Julie London on Liberty Records in 1955, backed by Barney Kessel on guitar and Ray Leatherwood on bass. A performance of the song by London in the 1956 film The Girl Can't Help It helped to make it a bestseller (reaching number 9 on US and number 22 on UK charts). London's recording was later featured in the soundtracks for the movies Passion of Mind, and V for Vendetta. It became a gold record, and in 2016, it was inducted by the Library of Congress in the National Recording Registry.

I finally found my true genre to sing- jazz. No more of that screaming over synthesised crazy pop music.. I’m done with that. I do remember liking Norah Jones years ago, I bought her cds 💿 without even knowing her genre is Jazz 😀🥰 The first classic I want to practice is “At Last”, “Cry me a River, original by Julie, then it’s Norah Jone’s and who knows where the world of female jazz will take me, but I know this, I’m going to be one happy singer, regardless if I’m good or not ☺️

Julie was not only a beautiful woman but she had a voice that could charm the heart of the of the coldest man. Her version of "Cry Me a River" is so poignant that no one has been able to match it. I want to know why this kind of music can't still be the mainstay of listeners today. Her song reaches the heart even in world that treasures electronic gimmicks over talent. The Centurion
