Hi Julie I too live in a low ceiling house. So I do paint the trim and ceiling the same color to visually extend height. I also find tall bookcases work but do not have any bc I like to use the walls for sconces and/or art photos. But I did eliminate the soffit in the kitchen and put lighted cabinets up there and it makes a huge difference in height perception. You are right about lighting. I have ceiling fans and you have to get huggers to accommodate lower ceilings. Why are the benefits of low ceilings ? Lower energy bills in winter, a cozy look, easy to clean and you can use tension rod lighting. I have 2 tension rod lights which I love bc I can put them anywhere. Have a great week ! Margaret

I have 8 ft ceilings, so I hung straight floor-to-ceiling curtains on each window (as high as possible), removed the popcorn ceiling texture, and painted it the same color as my walls, but in a very flat/matte sheen. The ceiling looks so much higher now! I thought about using crown molding, but decided not to since it doesn't match my minimalist/Japandi design style.
@edwardcasper52312 жыл бұрын
You might try a cove or similar molding that isn't ornate.

Some rooms look well without the crown ornament. Another trick if you care for a contrasting ceiling is a picture rail in your wall color no more than 6 inches below the ceiling height.

@okashi10 Жыл бұрын
@@WalkVideos4K I chose Benjamin Moore's OC-17 White Dove! I was between that color and Simply White, but some rooms of my condo get so much natural light that the Simply White looked too bright and a little bit yellow. My curtains are double layered -- one is a semi-transparent white (to let in light but provide privacy) and the other is a solid blackout white.

Another BIG thank you!!! Your videos are the best! I don’t find these kinds of photos on Pinterest or Houzz… you give me so many ideas, this one has the perfect master bedroom colors (the golden colored room w white crown moulding) for our room that will fix our awkward builder setup of a huge window in the middle of the long wall, finally I can see it blended in instead of a big eyesore if I put up draperies. Plus it shows how the blinds will be able to blackout the room instead of light coming through the top of draperies! So much vision! Woohoo!!!🎉

Thanks Julie. Great tips. I never thought about how crown moulding could make the ceilings appear taller. I want to share something interesting that a design/build reno team did on my house because it is a good bang for the buck. My house has 8’ ceilings. I have a square entry. The designer did a slightly recessed square in the ceiling, by pushing it up a foot and framing it out in the attic. They hung a pretty pendant fixture, that is shallow, in the middle. This is a nice transition from outside to inside when you are walking in, so you don’t really get the impression the ceilings are low, and the cost is minimal.

Yes! This is a brilliant way to make more of the ceiling space since you don’t need a whole lotta height to cut out that tray Merry 👍🏻

Love the content Julie! Yes. I would like to see more videos like this. Many of us have spaces with low ceilings. My whole house is like that. I never thought to add crown molding? I don't have ceiling lights in the front room. That might be a good solution for me. I have dark walls in my formal dining room and I think it works well. I used to have a dark taupe in the front room, but lightened it to cream. It gave the frontroom a light and airy feel(alabaster pearl by Behr). When the sun hits it it warms the room up. My furniture is dark warm brown so I am thinking I should keep.the walls lighter? Not sure. It is hard to work with shorter ceilings. I have larger paintings I have created, but I don't know how to hang them in shorter wall spaces? That might be another subject in a video. Art placement in lower ceiling height rooms. You may have already discussed this. I will have to scan through your videos... Thanks! I know what you mean... Trying to watch something and be quiet while nursing... Went through that with our son. I have the most awkward space. I live in a ranch style home with low ceilings like you. However, the room that we're trying to decorate has a breakfast nook. Along with sliding doors that go out to a screened in porch, and we repurposed a living room. Dining room maybe into a recording studio. So it didn't have doors. It was just an open room, and the room we're in is like a family room. trying to set up furniture or seating spaces has become insane for the space that we have. We also have a fireplace in that room. So it's lots of windows on one side of the room which surprisingly. Doesn't bring in a lot of light because we have so many trees. It's just the weirdest space to try to decorate. What is your advice?

If I have 6' tall guests it's not uncommon for them to hit their head on the light fixture, which is in the middle of the room. The house was built in 1899. It’s all about the contrast with furniture Ariel. If you have dark furniture, I would recommend going against dark paint or it will feel like a cavern. Light furniture plus layered lighting looks fabulous against dark walls, that’s when everything will pop and walls/ceiling will recede.

Is it OK to paint a basement all black with some accent of wood panel the ceiling is very low.
@JulieKhuu2 жыл бұрын
Sure, just make sure to specify all light furnishings so the space doesn’t feel too cavernous unless that’s your design intent

Oh boy, you are speaking to me with this video. Currently living in Switzerland and the ceilings here are like bunkers. People consider 2.4 m as "high ceilings" here. It's basically an architectural development country…
@JulieKhuu2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, that’s definitely low 😬

Hi Julie! I know you mentioned that 245 centimeters is a low ceiling. But what about 280cm? Just found out our contractor made a mistake. In stead of a 300cm concrete ceiling, he made the ceiling 280cm high. I think I can say goodbye to a coffered ceiling, right? :(
@JulieKhuu11 ай бұрын
You may still coffer the ceilings in an inset tray. He may have to do some maneuvering to stabilize what they cut out, but it’s totally doable if they can still cut out and up

I have 8 ft ceilings and crown molding. Would I put my curtain rods to the bottom of the crown molding or a bit lower?
@JulieKhuu2 жыл бұрын
A bit lower (2-3”) so the crown has some breathing room Erin

Hi Julie! Thank you for this video! I have 8' popcorn ceilings. Scraping or covering them is not an option. Would you still recommend painting them 2 shades lighter than walls, moldings, etc? Btw my style is curated eclectic boho with a dash of mcm! 😊 thanks so much! Congrats on wayfair sponsorship!
@JulieKhuu2 жыл бұрын
Yes same notes Cara. But in this case keep the sheen flat so you don’t draw more attention to the popcorn

Thanks for another great video! I have an awkward space in my living room where there is a 3x4 foot area, sectioned off by a knee wall for stairs going down to the basement. This is in the only corner of the room and where I wanted to put a sectional. What to do? Block off the space as it’s not really functional anyway?

Yes, you can create storage and close it with a custom cabinet door

Crown moldings are an interesting challenge here in Arizona because we have to work around air conditioning vents, which are placed high. Most of my ceilings are 8' but the rooms are relatively small, so the proportion works out. My media room ceiling is 7' 8" tall so it's even more of a challenge. But labeling it a "man CAVE" conveys the look I'm trying to get. LOL!!
@JulieKhuu2 жыл бұрын
I would implement the paint trick to paint all walls, ceilings and vents in the same color Edward. This will visually make the room appear as one without any breaks

I don’t know why most of your example picture are high ceiling room 😳 should we use more low ceilings room pic

Hi Julie I loved the content, we are just moving from East Coast WNY to Riverside Canyon Crest , I need help an idea what to do with the lower wall of the living room area where the fireplace and chemise is , it looks awkward

What’s your specific question Jean?

@@JulieKhuu as you said to paint the chimney it will look taller , paint the bricks dark color or light color like the wall and ceilings . Which is better in this case dark or light color for the chimney ?

I think I disagree on the tip for the "design on the ceiling". Even on the design examples (that have high ceilings) the patterned ceilings brings it way down and really makes the ceiling look lower.
@JulieKhuu2 жыл бұрын
The ceilings are the 5th wall in design. Whatever you do, don’t neglect it ☺️

Helpp! I can’t figure out what to do with my off centered window behind my coach. It’s a narrow window. Looks so odd ugh. Please help me out. Pinterest hasn’t helped nor you tube.
@JulieKhuu11 ай бұрын
Find the center point of what you’re framing and mount your curtain rod within those parameters. Purchase 2 panels and hang them symmetrically on the rod. The window will be uneven behind the panels, but you won’t even be able to tell because you’ve just faked a larger window. Design 101 Letisia, this is how the pros do it 🙌🏻😉
