This interview was ROUGH-it felt like I was watching an uncomfortable therapy session. She is so patient and gracious-what a doll. Smiling as he's asking her to reveal all her personal stories.

I feel so bad for Julien; I'm not sure if it was a language barrier from the interviewer but there are so many personal questions he did not need to ask one after the other--- I hope this didn't shake her too bad at the time and I hope she never has to do something like this again unless she is completely comfortable

so now that it’s been four years, can we acknowledge how deeply inappropriate and invasive both the interviewing and filming was here? she was made to deal with an extensive set of incredibly personal questions, obviously not vetted beforehand. she had words put in her mouth even when she tried to answer honestly, due to not giving the expected answer. she clearly hates conflict, and she’s visibly uncomfortable almost the entire time. making music with lyrics that deal with trauma and personal relationships does not entitle people to demand highly personal information about her relationships and life in interviews. she is an artist who has chosen to share her art with the world. she does not exist, as a person, for consumption. and although she was incredibly kind and well spoken, and i’m glad to hear her insights on her life and music… frankly, these videos are an example of how not to interview someone, especially someone notorious for being accommodating and gracious. unless you want to make them incredibly anxious and uncomfortable, that is.

I think some of the questions are waaay too personal..Of course her records deal with deep and personal experiences and thats why we like Julien for (sharing their essence) and processing those feelings is the reason people can relate to them. Yet I feel like asking her about her sexuality or the detailed stories behind certain songs was a little over the top. Obviously she is prepared for those kind of questions and she played it well, but it still felt off for me. Nevertheless, it's still my favourite interview with her, so thanks for sharing! really, really appreciated..

Greenalex89 she’s said before in interviews that while she hopes people ask more than just the personal ones, she she likes answering the deep ones because she knows they’re important! i know what you mean, though. i wasn’t a huge fan of this interviewer.

Mhh, how do i put this? Hard to explain..I don't think he was intentionally trying to take advantage of her in any way. For me it felt as if he was a fan of her music and lyrics too. And as for my case, I kinda feel really kind of connected to the artist Julien Baker, not the private person though, cause thats private (!) (and many many more people do), because she shared her private experiences and emotions so honestly and beautifully and gave me the opportunity to process my own, similar experiences. And so due to that "connection", affection, affiliation to the artist, whatever you might call it, he seemingly tended to want to find out what truth is behind certain lyrics he felt connected to. its just a theory and maybe I'm leaning myself a bit too far out of the window here, but as Julien pointed out, the lyrics mean to you what they need to mean in the specific moment. Yet, if you are deeply connected to them, if they mean a lot to you, there might be an urge to find out if there are parallels between your emotions while listening to them and the actual cause for writing those lyrics. If I would interview her, I'd hava a similar longing for those answers, but I'd post those questions a lot more vaguely, giving her the opportunity to decide for herself, how openly she wants them to answer. And with utmost respect for her actual privacy. Sry for the essay :)

Yeah, I get what you mean. I kind of agree and kind of don’t at the same time. Like I felt that the questions themselves were okay, but they were phrased a little to bluntly sometimes. He definitely could’ve phrased the sexuality question more like “so I read somewhere you identify as LGBT. If you’re comfortable talking about it, was that easy for you growing up, and how have like experiences such as but not limited to coming out affected your music?” (ofc there’s a slight language barrier and I don’t mean that exact phrasing) in pt. 1 I’d agree he was prying a little too much about her breakup. I think initially asking if there was one was okay but she definitely seemed uncomfortable and if he picked up on that he should’ve stopped.

I think the part of this interview that struck me as uncomfortable was not the questions themselves, but the way they were phrased, as well as the seemingly total lack of rapport established during or before the interview. She seemed very closed off and defensive at times, which made me as an audience member feel uncomfortable. I've seen interviews where Julien was asked very similar questions but because they were less direct and phrased differently, and after having established a bit of rapport with her, that interviewer didn't come off as prying. I feel like I'm just rephrasing what others have said, but that's how I felt watching this. It wasn't necessarily the questions, but the way they were delivered and the atmosphere of the interview that made me uncomfortable.
