My dad came to me and asked me to listen to this song. He often does this, so I didn't think anything of it. It's an undoubtedly beautiful song, but I knew that the lyrics as written and sung weren't what he was hearing. He's still very much grieving the loss of my grandmother and my uncle, both within the course of ten months. This song is haunting for him, allowing him a little more of the cathartic process. So thank you for gifting this song to the world.

she feels like an orchestra, that's the beauty she reaches with her voice and the piano. gives a hopeless diamond after another

I drank yesterday despite knowing all too well that I shouldn't. Today I listen to this song because it resonates with these matters more deeply than any other song. This song speaks to me so deeply that it makes me cry. "It's the mercy I can't take" is unbelievably poignant and hits the nail on the head of how I feel when I am forgiven for my lapses. This whole album is sublime, but this song is utterly devastating.

I wish that I drank because of you And not only because of me Then I could blame something painful enough Not to make me look any more weak When you heard my name You could be angry and have a good reason to be Then when I say a horrible drunken parade of my worst thoughts I'd say "Give me no sympathy" It's the mercy I can't take I wish you'd come over Not to stay, just tell me that I was your biggest mistake to my face And then leave me alone in an empty apartment Face down in the carpet I wish you'd hurt me It's the mercy I can't take

I am a classically trained vocalist and also a young idiot, so i sang this and put it on my channel. Thanks for the beautiful music, julien.

Best song on the album IMHO. Sounds like something you'd hear sung in a mostly empty, smoky basement lounge around midnight.

my favorite of the album i think. having others hold you accountable is such an important step in growth and forgiveness. so to instead have individuals around you that fail to enlighten you in your culpabilities against them as to not seem “mean,” it opens up a whole window of thinking, “oh man, i truly hurt them but they are too forgiving and kind to bring up the harm i caused them.” i never want to unintentionally hurt others with what i say, and god does julien get it

Listening to this song in prison in my cot on a smuggled iphone with the volume low so the co can't hear. God help me.

I cannot possibly conceive how a person could listen to this song and dislike it -let alone 12 people (and counting). My guess is bots, people who disliked this with their volume turned off, or someone so shattered emotionally by the song that they weren't even able to distinguish between the like and dislike buttons.

She's like the girl version of Elliott Smith. Maybe not as deep musically. But lyrically it's impressive as hell. And she sounds incredible

This is a really interesting song compared to the rest of the album; sounds almost like something you'd hear in a nightclub or lounge.
