Today we're exploring the language of one of the most ancient empires - Persian language. Even though it is old it is still thriving today. It is the national language of three countries: Iran, Afghanistan (where it is called Dari) and Tajikistan (where it is called Tajik). A little spoiler - Persian is different from Arabic!

Truly the most beautiful language I’ve ever heard. Probably the greatest poetic tradition of any language in the world too, so much so that it’s unsurprising that Rumi is the best selling poet in the West even with how much style and beauty is lost in translation.

@@manizarif2566 and about Persian, you have Serbian DNA, you come from origin Serbian people from Scytian tribe, from Sarmat, from Parthian, Serbian Aryan. We are separate long time ago. On the time of Nino Belov, before of Alexander the great, before Darius. Persian people, Pashtun people, and more people, we are familiar, brothers. But bad Arabian people give yiu new religion, islam, and new islamic names. Your ex king is Darije, is Serbian name, Darius (latin version of his name) Darius is not muslim name right? So, Arabian people change your names and your culture, and you start to follow islam, not Orthodox. And now we are different.

Many thanks indeed. A very informative review as usual, Julia. I recently started analysing the so-called Turkic languages of Central Asia and came to a conclusion that this region had either been under a strong Persian influence in the past or used to trade with Indo-Persian world, which can be traced in numerous word borrowings. For example, words used for many vegetables, cereals, days of the week, round-shaped baking oven (tandur) are very similar to those found in modern and old Persian. It is amazing. Zaboni Tochiki (the Tajik language) is probably the closest one to Farsi in the large family of Indo-Persian languages

I would like to bring a small correction regarding the word you used to greet your audience: “Salam” is an Arabic loan word… The Farsi equivalent would be Bedrood or Dorood. Wikipedia: Dorood which originates from Middle Persian Drod, which also originates from the Avestan language, the word Dravat (Meaning: Health), is a polite and official form of hello in the Persian language, (also recognised as 'Parsi' or 'Farsi'), whilst Bedrood '(Pedrood)' is an equivanlent to see you next time or goodbye.

@@abbeyrhapsody3205 It's not something to blame. We are neighbors with Arabs, we have too many Arabic words (as mentioned in the video 40 percent Arabic loan words or even more), and we use Arabic alphabets for writing. But if you read through any Linguistics book or even Wikipedia pages, you would see that Persian has the same roots as European languages like English or Italian (they are all Indo-European languages). And our basic vocab and grammar are more similar to European languages than to Arabic. Mother (en) - Mater (Latin) - Maadar [ˈməT͟Hər] (fa) - Omm ['um] (ar) But Arabic along with Hebrew and Aramaic and some others are Semitic languages. Wikipedia pages about languages are a good place to start reading about them. :)

I'm persian and I felt so happy finding this video on my recommendations. Your information were so good and you covered a lot of things that we, Iranian people wish others knew about our language, *specially* the fact that we are not Arab. You are awesome!💛

I was so touched about the fact that she mentioned NEVER say persian is Arabic. because aside from the political and historical reasons our language is always mistaken due to the scrip.

The real Aryans are us (the people of Afghanistan) This language was born in Afghanistan. Modern Afghanistan is the homeland of this language. The people in Fars province of Iran were smarter and they saved everything in the name of Iran or Irani. The Afghans were fighting each other and didn’t care much about their past. That is why we need to tell everyone about our history and culture.

I have loved the poetry of Omar Khayaam since aged 15 yrs, but didn't realize how beautiful the Persian language sounded! It is beautiful, lyrical, gentle on the ear. Thank you also for the history - your presentation taught me so much in such a short time! I am English living in Australia, only having a little schoolgirl French and Russian with English (of course!) as my first language. Currently picking up a little Mexican Spanish from my daughter in law. But how beautiful it would be to speak Persian, or even understand a little! Thank you again for your wonderful lesson! Best wishes, Janet C.

I've been told it sounds bad :D HAHA. That it sounds like a mix of 2 "bad" sounding languages and 1 "good" sounding language, namely Russian, Hindi and Italian, with Italian being the good sounding one? :(. Anyways, I think a lot of it depends on which country is richer and closer to the west, when it comes to language sounds beautiful to people. I remember Arabic was hated a lot (unfortuantely since its crazy gorgeous... lol) before the 2020 crisis, afterward all of sudden people felt more at east hating on the sound of Persian around the web. Just curious, which mix of other languages would you say describes farsi well, perhaps other than the 3 languages I was told about ty
