Sometimes it's not just arm angle, you can also sometimes read what a pitch might be just by how open/closed their glove looks when they're getting set. Strasburg was tipping pitches that way when they were on their World Series run a few years back.

I feel like it’d be very noticeable as a batter getting different arm angle releases. Because it’s not only changing where he releases the ball but the angle the ball is traveling. As a batter tracking the ball from release to the plate your going to notice 2 completely different angles. Not taking away from them being pros they’re great.

ohhhh man thank you for breaking this down! This is one of the BEST BEST breakdowns EVER! I love these battles and these little mind games they do to each other with arm slots and such! It's why I love watching pitchers all my life, and as a kid my dad told me something very similar and we always looked for the arm slot and different types of motions each pitcher would do and try to throw off batters and/or telegraph to batters.

It's interesting that in today's pitching environment, teams really stress pitchers keeping a consistent arm slot. It's the complete opposite of the thought process from back in the day. As an example, in "The Science of Hitting," Ted Williams talks about how having multiple arm slots for every pitches effectively increases your pitch repertoire. He believed if a guy threw 3 pitches, but could throw each of them from 2 arm slots, the pitcher essentially had 6 pitches.

He's right, but that's also *why* teams stress keeping the consistent arm slot. Very few pitchers are capable of throwing more than three good pitches, so it comes down to whether or not you want your guys to focus really hard on being able to repeat the three good pitches they have really well, or throw more pitches less well. I think 100% of pitching coaches in the major and minor leagues would prefer to have their guys focus on quality over quantity in their repertoires, but there will always be some freaks for whom the normal rules don't apply.

Jomboy perfectly translates the minutiae to them and everyone else that didn't really understand the complexity of baseball as a professional sport. That was awesome! I freaking love the mental aspect of pitching. Thank you for such an entertaining explination of that at bat. I know this is way out there and dating myself, but I remember the Bobby Welch v Reggie Jackson at bat when #44 struck out. I just love battles like that.
