Most people don't realize this man's creativity and ability to score. Remember, this is against Kareem, Michael Cooper, Magic and the freakin' Lakers. He has become way underrated. He is truly one of the very greatest.

100 percent true. Good grief; if Philly would have said to him do ur thang, his numbers all around would be even more staggering. Tremendous off the ball defender. Wonderful 12-15 foot bank shooter from either side. In today's game with all the training, specialized diets etc....He would be the face of the NBA. Think about it.... all wide open lanes...he would be attacking the rim like a fat hungry kid eating cake. Greatest open court player ever....and it ain't close.

@@GoGetYourShinebox No, Jordansexual, he wasn't. The Doctor's open-court skills take a backseat to no one, especially Little Mikey. On other erroneous fronts you put out there, Jordan's defense was vastly overrated. When he was being torched, Scottie Pippen was often called on to save Jordan's sorry ass. Erving's defense was no worse than MJ's and Doc was a much better shot-blocker. Jordan had a better outside shot than Dr. J. That's the best I can do.

Julius saved TWO leagues. He saved the ABA long enough for the merger to take place. Then he saved the NBA until Magic and Bird came in. Doc was known for his dunks, but look how many times he laid it up, shot the short jumper, or hit the perimeter shot.

what about his play making..so many assists ,particulary on the double teams,so simple, fundamental and efficient and sometimes fancy too, in paints full of bodies..no selfisness at all..if The Sixers gave Dr J a point forward role with his super fast first step he would have had way more assists drawing the second and third defender on him..the man was not even a ball dominant player at all, which is very very exceptional for his status in the league!

He saved the NBA for certain sure,,,, the ABA was the most exciting league between the two, but unfortunately the ABA was on its way out, some teams had already started dismantling - Kentucky Colonels had already sold Issel to Denver in preparation for the merger,,, one example. By then they knew it was over. The ABA WAS A SUPERIOR LEAGUE. I'VE ALWAYS WISHED IT COULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT.

Dr J apart of 30000(8th) pnts also has 10000 boards(more than many centers like ben wallace), 2000 blocks(triple lebron/jordan/kobe) 5700 assists and 7th all time steals to this day..when he went to the sixers the managment asked him and this is well known fact, to drop his scoring so the rest of the egos in that team will be ok and take only 10 to 15 shots per game..that was a 40 per cent reduction from his usual ABA attempts per game..he ended up with 24 ppg career and slightly over 50 per cent fg percent whitch was the same during the ABA and NBA years..so do the math and you ll see that with a few extra attempts if he was in a more Julius Erving type of "system" like Kobe,Lebron,Westbrook or Harden he would easily be 28 + ppg player with way more boards , steals and blocks from all aforemantioned.. Have in mind that the 70s was a team/us type of era and the mentality was way different than the years that followed and the sixers have completely flopped two other all time greats(CB and AI) proving themselfs very unsucessfull coaching/managment/backoffice wise..yet in the Julius Erving era they went to the NBA finals 4 out of 7 times and got their only title since...

My favorite Dr. J story from the NBA (& ABA for a brief period) referee Earl "Yogi" (yes his nickname from his mates in our hometown, Pottstown, PA) Strom. After working an ABA game where he saw the Doctor for the 1st time, Yogi said to some writers, "I just saw the greatest basketball player in the world," (this from a ref who saw Elgin, Bob Petit, Jerry, Oscar, Bob Cousy, Bill & Wilt). For this infraction of public commentary on a player Yogi was fined $50 (it was the early 70's). He wrote a check for $100 with this note, "Here's the $50 fine for saying it plus, another $50 for the next time I say it."

Here is another amazing fact about Dr J..we have highlights only from maximum 200 hundred games..he played 1250 games..if one judges from his rookie appearance in ABA vs NBA all stars ,where he only played 13 minutes (due to 70s mentality about younger people having to wait first and prove them selves and without the commissioner and Nike on his sail) and totally stand out both defensively and offensively as one of a kind, generating a plethora of highlights, while we miss the 4quarter and the in game ,from the foul line dunk on Oscar, one can only imagine how many hundreds of highlights we miss, since most of it is from the big stage vs Celtics,Lakers,Portland and some with Bucks and the All star games..here is a vid with some highlights vs Utah against Eaton , when he was already 34/35..by the way the dunk over Prime Eaton at .40 is the nastiest in game dunk of all times period..no comparison, eye to eye , chest to chest, from the vert fully anticipated by the most intimidating shot blocker of all times..than man (Eaton) has completely terrorized guys like Hakeem or MJ plenty of times,no one would have the balls to even attempt this dunk face to face! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqSQgKyvgZKUebs here Eaton is treating very athletic MJ like a toy he can just suspend anytime..MJ cant even believe what's going on!!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXyyh2OrasRjhJI Can you even imagine this guy getting illegal screens at the top of the key with an empty paint behind , able to palm and carry while dribbling and taking 4 step lay ups?
