Dr. J literally is the reason the NBA is what it is today. He put the league on his back and made it international.

Doc J was the man, but Jordan took the game global. Magic and Larry took it National and made it popular. DR J my 2nd favorite player. But you have to understand, the NBA wasnt even live at one point in the 80s, it was on tape delay. Magic and Larry took it to the next level, the Jordan elevated it.

For a quiet chubby little white boy who grew up loving basketball and often shooting by myself he was almost godlike status to my young brain. Everything about him was cool. From the afro to the the sneakers to the amazing dunks and moves on the court. There was simply nobody like him before nor after.

He was the first one that really captured the imagination.A long ,tall black bird effortlessly gliding over the outstretched arms of his opponents.A real hero for me as a kid.Plus he was also a classy, dignified dude in the way he conducted himself on and off the court.

There was essentially no TV market for the ABA so as a kid growing up in Milwaukee in the late 60s and early 70s with our own NBA team, we heard about this Julius Erving guy or Dr. J, but never saw him play so there was a certain mystique surrounding him. When they finally started doing the NBA - ABA all-star games we saw he was the real deal. The original Air Jordan. One can only imagine the library of highlight reels had he and Maravich been team mates.

When I was a kid he drove my love for basketball. He was almost a mythical figure. In an age well before social media and 24 hour news coverage I would seek out the sports section of any newspaper I could find to see what he had done or if the Sixers had played the night before and I would cut out the section describing the game and sometimes there would be a small picture of him dunking on someone and that would be priceless.

My idol since I was 13. He never talked trash and was always a statesman on and off the court unlike todays drama players, plus his talent was god like. That’s why I idolized “the doctor”. I actually tried to look like DrJ when I played jv and high school basketball for 4 years in the late 70s. My coaches always made sure I was given a #6 jersey,(thank you coach bobbitt and coach mason), I had the big Afro, wore the knee high white socks and wore the same sneakers he wore in games(converse?). I even had the infamous “ behind the backboard” layup giant poster among other posters of him on my bedroom walls. And I tried to mimic every move he had when I played. I was missing one thing though.. his talent.🤣 He was a superstar and is a legend. Thank you Dr J for being my idol.. u were a major impact on my youth.

Everytime I watch these highlights of my childhood idol I get a charge of energy inside as if I'm about to cry. This man, Julius Erving, was just plain different man. Nothing from Jordan; nothing from Kobe; nothing from Lebron. They were not on his level and he was not on theirs. The clear truth is that THEY HAVE TO pay honor to him because Dr J served as a template to their style of play (explosive scoring, fast break, high flying above the rim style).

If you ever wanted to demonstrate that there is real magic in the world, have a look at the faces of the people in the crowds of these games. When Dr. J makes a move and scores, it's like a happy spell is cast over the fans. They stand up and cheer, they jump up and down, they hug each other and become ecstatic and for that moment, they are themselves the hero, sharing in that moment. They are transported to a better place and the Doctor delivered them there.

It's so hard to translate or communicate to the younger generation how Dr. J's originality was shocking. His aggressive dunking on anyone in the half-court or fullcourt was amazing. Then his smoothness in moves under and over the rim was also amazing. He took Wilt's (the Big Dipper) finger roll and took it to another level (Dr. J acknowledged this). Both him and Iceman George Gervin. (Who were teammates on the Virginia Squires and probably polished and pushed each other). Seeing basketball redefined was priceless and shocking. These highlights don't even capture his many shocking half court dunks in heave traffic. He had incredible bounce off two feet even with just one step or even no step. Then his humbleness with it all is so unlike so many other stars. He was also the ambassador of basketball. He gave a whole new look in how to comport oneself as a basketball player. Of course there were other before him like Bill Russell who were great ambassadors of the game. Dr J speaks of how Bill Russell mentored him. So he had that influence. He also speaks of the great Elgin Baylor being one of his heroes. Elgin Baylor was amazing - and super efficient. Wish I could see more of his game. Most people know very little of that great player. Just look up his amazing stats! I wish more of the younger stars would emulate the character of players like those giants on and off the court!

My top ballers in no particular order: Kobe, T-mac, Dr.J, Magic, Jordan, Vince Carter, Cliff Robinson. Favorite Dynasty. The 80's lakers, and the 90's Bulls
