Just imagine how different history would’ve been had Edward lived and married Mary (and managed to have an heir by her, of course).

Sarah Na--A marriage of Edward VI to his close cousin, Mary Stuart, would have been consanguineous and would have needed a special dispensation from the Pope (and Edward was raised as a Protestant, not a Roman Catholic--that might have been a sticking point for Mary). Close relative marriages result in birth defects--some very severe.

And if they were married and Edvard died without heir, Mary schould have been widow to the King of England and grand grand daughter to Henry VII....

That would have been an interesting marriage considering that Mary was Catholic and Edward was Protestant. Mary was religious tolerance but Edward wasn't and I don't know if he would have gone through with the marriage later on with Mary being Catholic. Edward was a bright young man and sad that he died so young because he was really intelligent and very mature for his age. I'm just not sure that he would have wanted to go ahead with the marriage despite how beautiful Mary Queen of Scots was and how friendly and outgoing she was. The people at English Court would have really liked her but it's possible that some of them may have snubbed their noses because she was Scottish after all. Once she was sent to France and educated there she grew up to have a French accent rather than the Scottish accent. The relationship between Edward and Mary Queen of Scots would have been interesting to say the least. I don't think that Mary's mother felt comfortable allowing Mary to Wed into the Tudor family because of all the slaughter going on. You notice it didn't end after King Henry the 8th died because it got worse with Mary Tudor. It slowed down with Elizabeth but she still was so much like her father was pathetic. Queen Elizabeth was not religious tolerant like Mary Queen of Scots and she was jealous and conceited which are things that Mary Queen of Scots cared not for. Mary was outdoors and athletic.

Well. Edward, six years old and Mary, less than one year. Consummation, peace for the entire life of either prince/princess plus one year, hostage formalization, extenuating death circumstances... ratified! Then denied by the Scottish parliament (sounded like they got the best bargain in this treaty), only to end up in WAR - a Rough Wooing! What a hoot! People died because of this treaty; sounds like a bunch of loonies! Things never work out like we plan, no matter how hard we try otherwise. Thank you for this lesson; appreciate your work, knew nothing about this and learned something new today!

Since Mary went to France, I just assumed that had always been the plan for her. I just caught up with yesterday's post too (non-computer day yesterday!) I can only imagine the sight of the royal progress coming down the road and the poor nobleman and his wife panicking over where to put everyone, how to feed everyone and still take care of their own farms/village tenants. I am glad I got a double dose of you today. Cheers!

I had a convo with my parents about six weeks ago explaining why it would be considered a bit creepy for Edward and Mary to be betrothed. I had like a whole spacial kind of family tree thing going on, because my Dad was so confused at one point. 😅 The shame is that despite not marrying Edward, Mary ended up marrying yet another young king who also died young, and that’s where all her troubles began in earnest.

In the upper reaches of the royalty and nobility, there was a lot of incestuousness. Henry VIII was a distant cousin of Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour (and Catherine Howard was a cousin of the first degree to Anne Boleyn). Henry and Catherine of Aragon were both descended from John of Gaunt. Henry himself was descended from three of Edward III's sons: Lionel, Duke of Clarence, John, Duke of Lancaster (same as above), and Edmund, Duke of York. Mary Stuart and Edward Tudor's familial relationship was in the first degree, once-removed (Edward's paternal aunt was Mary's paternal grandmother). Mary subsequently married Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, who was her half- first cousin (Henry was the grandson of Margaret Tudor from her second marriage). Henry Stewart was also a Stewart because his father was related to the Scottish royal family, of which Mary eventually became the head. It goes on and on with these familial relationships. Mary Tudor (Henry VIII's daughter) married her first cousin, once-removed. Another Mary Stuart (daughter of James II/VII) married her first cousin. Queen Victoria married her first cousin. As a side note, Victoria's mother and Prince Albert's father were siblings, not only to each other, but also to Leopold, the first King of the Belgians. Leopold was the husband and widower of Charlotte of Wales, the heir presumptive to the British throne and Victoria's first cousin. Had Charlotte not died young, Leopold would have occupied the position later held by his nephew Albert.

I always ponder that if Henry VIII had been successful and taken charge of Mary (Queen of Scots) she might then have had the relationship with England that she had with France. In fact as Francois and Edward both died without heirs, she would still have finished as the youthful, lovely widow BUT what would have happened in England if on Edward's death there was an heir to the English throne (which she was through Margaret Tudor) actually readily available to take charge? Where would it have left Mary Tudor and Elizabeth? Would Mary Stewart have had the same relationship with Catholicism? Would Edward have minded? He did not like his sister's devotion to her faith. In a parallel universe where would we all have been? Wonderful posting, Claire, thank you. I had no idea that 'The Rough Wooing' went on so long and had so many ramifications.

Had Mary, Queen of Scots been brought to England at a young age, it would have been bad for Mary Tudor and disastrous for Elizabeth Tudor. Mary Stuart could have built a faction in England that might have made her a more attractive heir to Edward than either of his sisters. Edward might have been more inclined to name his wife, the granddaughter of Henry VIII's older sister descending through a son as his heir rather than their cousin Jane who was the granddaughter of Henry's younger sister and who descended through daughters. On the other hand, in this way, Elizabeth and Mary Stuart might have had a chance to meet in person, which they never did in actual history.

I knew about this but not all the condition and everything. But IF they were ever married, imagine, Mary Queen of Scots would then be Mary Queen of Scots and England by both marriage and blood line from Margaret Tudor. A Catholic and so does Mary Tudor 1, who was next in line for the throne according to Henry VIII's will. Just imagine the power of both of those women ruling England and Scotland. Theeeen.. I don't think Elizabeth would've turned to what she became. No Golden Age. Big what if. I guess no matter how bad I feel for both Mary Queen of Scots and Mary Tudor 1, I wouldn't change anything to what had happened to them because they were all an important piece for the bigger puzzle. I will always mourn for them.

@@anneboleynfiles I never realized that Jane Grey was Thomas Seymour's Ward. Hmm I know that his brother Edward had him tried and executed. it wasn't too long after that or maybe a few years that Edward Seymour, Uncle of the young king and protector as well as the one in charge of England until Edward was at age to rule alone, infuriated King Edward VI moving him in the middle of the night. The circumstances were outrages to the king and he was so Furious that he had the council get a hold of his uncle and then Edward Seymour was beheaded.. It's weird how things come around like that because the Seymour family were so ambitious and yet people talk about the Boleyns being terrible. NOO.. the Duke of Norfolk has been in politics for a long time and Thomas Bowlin has been an ambassador over in France so they were already in the political world. It was Edward Seymour and his father John that really pushed Jane Seymour in to Henry as if he weren't already attracted to her as it was. Henry tried to get Jane as a mistress and she was playing hard-to-get and I guess she thought she could get him to divorce Anne.. nooooo!! That girl was living in a dream world and is Henry really really love to Jane the way he said he did he would have had her coronated a lot sooner but he kept making excuses and he made excuses for every Queen except for Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn.. Jane Seymour did give Henry and male heir, & that's about all because there was nothing more to her. I think she was rather boring after reading a lot about her.. Jane and Henry married May 30th 1536 and he could have had her coronated that summer or even in the fall before it got too cold. That's why I always look at Catherine and Anne Boleyn as being the 2 teue queens of England. It's just sad for both women and situations in addition to both princesses..

At this time I am starting to guess that, back then, marriage agreements at such a young age were hardly ever taken seriously, since even royal babies often died, and if they survived alliances would change as they grew up: I never imagined they would name a war out of one of those!

I remember first reading this probably a decade ago and not really understanding how two young children could be "married" or even betrothed. Reading more and finding these betrothals to be more normal than I had first thought, I remember reading adults who went through these mock marriages on behalf of the children and that the laying of a leg across the legs of the representative for the girl was considered symbolic of "consummation". Was this common or just used a lot in place of royal children?

I am not really that surprised about the treaty falling apart.... Henry would very much have liked to have had Scotland as part of the kingdom of his son and was very much pushing to get this control. While some parties in Scotland may have agreed to it as a means of preventing bloodshed by Henry's army, I can still see why many Scots parliamentarians would still remember that Henry (actually his wife, Catherine of Aragon) had marched against Scotland and killed Mary's grandfather when he was king of the Scots - even though he was Henry's own brother-in-law! (Yup, Mary's grandmother was Henry's sister, and one of the main reasons why Mary's son, James would become king of England and the Scots once Elizabeth had died.) The Scots had probably had enough of the English trying to 'strong-arm' them the whole way through Henry's reign and why there were so many back and forth raids and battles. It is ironic that it was Henry's sister's off-spring, James, who would be the first king of both kingdoms, rather than Henry's!

@@sandranorman5469 Mary was married three times: Francis II, king of France; Henry Darnley, father of James VI & I; James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell. The first two died. Bothwell lingered in a Danish prison for a while. Mary did not remarry after that marriage. Mary was brought up in France, basically a Catholic country. Upon her return to Scotland it is reported she entered into spirited discussions of religion with protestants like Knox. At the time of her execution it is said she rejected Anglican prayers, saying she wished to die in the faith she had always practiced. As I understand it, Mary's claim to Elizabeth's throne had a large basis in religion. From the Catholic point of view, Elizabeth was illegitimate. I think too that Mary became a Catholic martyr because it served the Catholic cause. It is said great care was taken that none of Mary's blood was collected for relics. It is also noted that she wore a "crimson" petticoat when executed and that this was the color of Catholic martyrdom. So far as I know she has not been beatified so it looks to me like Mary as martyr was more political than religious.

King Henry the 8th ball far more expensive Jewels for his hussy wife and the other one that was playing hard-to-get games for a couple of months until Henry had an executed because of Lies. Goodness gracious Mary's mom should have stood up for a whole lot more of a dowry than that.. I'm very familiar with the rough wooing..but I had no idea that part of Henry's a marital Alliance for Edward and Mary was for 3 Earls from Scotland to be hostages in England until the treaty was carried out and Maryn& Edward were wed. That's barbaric and typical Henry the 8th tyranny..

Do you think that the fact that Edward and Mary never got the chance to be wed, as first cousins once removed, may have helped “thin the blood”, as it were, in Europe for a bit? When you look at what all of the damage that inbreeding did to the Hapsburgs, it’s rather frightening.

Back then children were practically considered adults once they reached puberty. Margaret Beaufort (Henry VIII's grandmother) was 14 when she had Henry VII. His wife Elizabeth of York was about 15 when she had her first son Prince Arthur.

Hey Claire do you think it's fair that Elizabeth executed Mary of Scots? I personally think Mary had a right to feel the way she felt although her acting on it was a bit much. No one wants to be on good behavior and still never be free or see their child for a lifetime. I feel like she really should've received mercy and understanding. But instead Elizabeth had her head taken off with multiple blows.

Mary plotted to kill Elizabeth multiple times

@anneboleynfiles 5 жыл бұрын
From a modern perspective, I don't think that Elizabeth should have executed anyone, but I'm not sure that Elizabeth in the time she was living had much choice after Mary had been implicated in plots. She'd tried imprisoning her, and that hadn't worked, and Scotland didn't want to deal with her.

@@kamrunsultana4338 Really? What else did she do? My sources are internet and KZbin limited which I learned is not always accurate or complete. I learned that she gave Elizabeth gifts and that she wasn't very smart and lost her 👑 due to some very poor decision making. Then she fled to England hoping that Elizabeth would help her is what one had said. I think she did plot against her multiple times in the series reign although that series wasn't completely accurate either.

Why would Henry want a marriage between his son and his niece? The consanguinity is what he used to divorce
@beth7935
@beth7935 4 жыл бұрын
Son & great-niece actually, but still, eugh. And as for "consanguinity" being why he divorced Catherine... well, he'd had 22 years to think about it, & didn't mention it til he fell in love with Anne, sooo... Royalty & the nobility were always marrying their cousins, & this did end up meaning they had a possible "get out of jail free" card if things went badly in some way.

Edward couldn’t & wouldn’t even tolerate his oldest 1/2 sister being Catholic. How would he have ever gotten on with a Catholic wife? ..I doubt very much that he would’ve.. Henry VIII either didn’t think about or didn’t care how his break w/ Rome & the beginning of The Church Of England would affect making marriage matches for his children. Although I’m not sure Henry ever put any true or serious thought into marriages for either of his daughters. He certainly didn’t try to match The Lady Mary (poor thing). Didn’t he actually turn down proposals for her? I realize that Elizabeth was younger & also illegitimate but still..it seems if he could’ve used her for a good match he would’ve done so. But as far as Edward Prince Of Wales & Mary Of Scotland are concerned-even as young children I don’t think it would’ve ever been a good match bc of their religious differences.

Shannon Hubbard I agree with you that Edward and Mary QOS would have not made a good match, particularly because of religious differences. Also I think their personalities were quite the opposite. Edward was scholarly and serious, Mary the hopeless romantic.

Didn't the treaty say that Mary would have English tutors? Perhaps, she wouldn't have been a strong Catholic in this timeline depending on what her English tutors believed religiously.

@@--enyo-- Exactly. But since Edward *also* died early, & most likely before he would have consummated the marriage, I'm not sure that there'd be too big a difference in the history - except that Mary might have tried to take the thrones instead of Mary Tudor!

Agree!! That's why I don't understand why the English were so upset about Scotland breaking this treaty or Alliance for Mary Queen of Scots to marry Edward because Mary was religious tolerance but Edward was not at all. Mary Queen of Scots was a beautiful, tal, intelligent, outgoing and very athletic brilliant/ clever woman; but she was not going to have anybody tell her what to do.
