📜 John Knox's Fiery Attack on Queen Mary I! 🔥👑
On this day in Tudor history, 20th July 1554, John Knox, the fiery theologian and leader of the Protestant Reformation in Scotland, unleashed a scathing pamphlet titled “A Faithful Admonition to the Professors of God's Truth in England.” In it, he fiercely condemned Queen Mary I, her return to Catholicism, and her brutal persecution of Protestants. 📖✒️
Dive into Knox's harsh words, where he calls Mary an “incestuous bastard” and worse than Jezebel, accusing her of thirsting for innocent blood. Knox's wrath didn't stop there; he also attacked her advisors, branding Bishop Stephen Gardiner as a “wolf” and a “son of the Devil.” 😱🐺
Join me as we explore the historical context, the intense religious conflict of the time, and the profound impact of Knox's writings on England and the Protestant Reformation. 🌍✝️

I agree I think that the reason Knox was so popular back then is because back then is because the everyday hard working people were very sick and tired of some elite group of people who were disconnected from life outside of their castle were telling them what do and Knox would unabashedly tell the elites the cold hard truth.

The daily Tudor tidbits are like getting an unexpected visit from a friend, and are such a day-brightener, but if a weekly video is more convenient for you, it would be just as welcome. John Knox was a real piece of work, wasn't he? He wielded words like weapons! Not someone I'd want for a friend . . . and certainly not as an enemy!

I really have enjoyed these videos everyday! I do know they probably can be hard on you to do everyday, and so for that reason some days I do wonder if you ever need a day off or a break because we all need some time just for ourselves. But I know other people have said in other comments that it's kind of like stopping by for a visit with family for a moment each day. We've grown use to seeing you on the daily and seeing each other in the comment section, because we all share what we know with each other as well! It's so nice to have a "Tudor family" that we can see each day! But if you are getting burned out or need a rest then I'm sure there are many of us who would be here with you if it were everyday or a few times a week or even weekly! In the end, whatever works best for you Claire is what is best because we would be lost without our "Tudor mother"!

I think we all would love Claire to continue doing a daily video on Tudor history for another year, but we have to be realistic. We have to remember that their was no internet back then, and that even books were very rare. In other words, the sources of interesting historical material are limited. I'm amazed that Claire has been able to produce such quality material on a daily basis so far. Personally, my favorite videos are the ones from the reign of Henry VII and the early years of the reign of Henry VIII, when he was still in love with Catherine of Aragon. I also love when the topics are based on personal letters that I never knew existed. That being said, I will be happy with whatever we get.

What an outspoken man! Opinionated and courageous! He knew how dangerous his words were - just look at all the martyrs burned and dismembered; he probably attended some of those religious murders. Thank you for bringing this forward today. You also asked for feedback about daily versus weekly: most people seem to push for the daily. But really, it's up to you and what you can do given time and the expense for our historical education. I love daily, but could adapt to weekly if that is what you decide. These are all interesting observations about Mary I, John Knox, and Catholic / Protestant conflicts. I also believe it is hard to understand these conflicts today because we tend to look at these conflicts through a modern, western lens. Reflecting on past religious disputes may help us all better understand current-day religious disputes. Thanks for posting these videos, Claire; they're a bit addicting! For next year, a series on ambassadors to the various Tudor courts, and what they reported on might be interesting. Chapuys, for example, had an interesting perch from which he observed Henry VIII's court. It would also be interesting to explore how Henry VII's relationship with Henry VIII may have influenced Henry VIII's later decision-making. Just a couple of thoughts, but your videos are awesome!

Thank you, Claire for another informative and fascinating video! Regarding John Knox, he is one of my least favorite characters in Tudor history. The man was appalling. If his writings and sermons are any indication, he was a vicious misogynist and probably did more damage to the Protestant Reformation than any other person at the time.

I love the daily videos. I would love to hear more facts during the times of Queen Catherine of Aragon and also during Henry the 7th and Queen Elizabeth of York. Strangely you and I have something in common, I also was born on February 11th and share birthday with you, Clare, and Elizabeth of York. I am an American and most American schools start with European history by glazing over Arthur dies and Henry becomes king and his wife doesn't have kids so on to Anne. There is almost 1/2 century of Tudor history that precedes that......and is less well known by the general public.
