July 2023 Update- New Mouthpieces, Large Tenor Project and ITF

Yeah, Doug’s mouthpieces are definitely the most colorful that I own. They definitely have the three elements of the tone triangle - core, warmth and brilliance. And his new designs since 2020, the ones marked with the star, work even better than the older ones. As a bonus, they are also some of the easiest, most effortless mouthpieces to play. I’ve been finding lately that they really excel when playing lyrical passages. The sound is so smooth and sweet.

The XT G combination for large bore was a massive game changer for me as well, especially playing an Elkhart 88H and having the special Conn shank that fits the Remington leadpipe. Seems to be a magic cup. And the 104MN rim is also great (I'm switching back and forth between the regular 104 and the MN so far, both are great)

I really like Doug’s MN rims. I have one in the 105 size for euphonium.

I tried an N104 once, didn’t like it. I use his regular tenor rims, or Wedge rims that are threaded for Elliotts. Never tried the MN. On bass I use an XB MW113/L8. I really dig the MW bass rim, very comfortable.

My Euphonium friend has the same setup or almost the same, I think he has a Euphonium XT 104 Med. narrow G or H cup , 8 shank. He really likes it and says it matches well. Thein/Rath mouthpieces- sounds like there is something about American vs. European style of mouthpieces (rather than American vs. German), maybe European mps are lighter weight/mass, freer to vibrate or something. (Never tried Thein so I don't know).

The Thein is pretty light, the Rath is quite heavy. They are also really different in length- it's surprising they both work so well, even if it's in totally different ways.

I got a DE K setup, i really like it. Same with my G+ on tenor, but i would downsize if i was playing often, but i don’t so. Did you try out any of his bass pieces?

I have on a few occasions. I really don't dig them nearly as much as the tenor pieces. I think I can deal with something a bit harder to play on bass since it's where I come from, but for tenor I need the help!

I bough a Doug Elliott MP for my 2 tenors .500 & .525. I’ve got a pretty decent collection of tenor MP’s I like most of them. I got an opportunity to buy very like new used gold rimmed & shank Doug Elliott. ( something between a 6.5 and a 7 cup.) hands-down it blows everything away that I own in my collection both sound and playability. Now I am thinking i have have one for my large bore. Do you know if I can call Doug Elliott by phone and discuss his thoughts on a size for a large bore?
