What a tongue twister of a name! It was good that they couldn’t invade and begin another war. Thank you for another great video! Love learning daily about Tudor history!

Sounds like everybody was ready to visit Great Britain on this day 400+ years ago. And then went home after a short visit. After all the money spent to invade, it was suddenly all over! Good. Another war would've been a pain. Thank you for today's update and news of the invasion on the Isle of Wight. That was a close one!

Another interesting and enjoyable video. I had a cousin who lived on the Isle of Wight many years ago. This time we got the double pleasure of having one of your cats and the bells join in today's lesson.

Thank you, Claire. Always some surprises. I had not known of this invasion. Early in in the vlog your cat appeared in the archway/doorway behind you, and the bells tolled for the French-a very nice episode today with two of the favorite elements appearing.

Not from there, but I've visited! A lovely place with surprising variations in geology. But there are a lot of cliffs - in my memory, there would be few places one could even attempt an invasion!

The opening scene in Young Bess is set on board the Great Harry and they're watching for the French who are eventually spotted. Royalty are swiftly sent back to safety and Elizabeth says rather scornfully that *she* wouldn't have let them land on the Isle of Wright (not that they stayed long according to the book). Overall, it's treated as almost a non-event.

Claire I am fascinated with this topic a woman in the United States living in New Jersey. I am 40 and I've been following your channel ever since I got obsessed with watching the show time version of the Tudors, and IPhone so downloaded many off the grid type of information such as things from PB S which is public television the Smithsonian channel about the the wives of Henry VIII learning about his father there was a new show on free form channel in the United States which is a sister channel to I believe ABC. And they had one season called the Spanish princess and it shows Catherine of Aragon sent by her mother to marry Arthur henry's older brother there's only 1 season and with 6 episodes I wanted to know what your take was on that Hill infatuated henry or at that time Harry was with the Spanish princess and how she was born and bred according to her mother Queen is abella to be Queen of England and how much as henry did love her for those 1st 20 years I'm anxious to see the next season I am in love with everything of this period and learning about Anne Boleyn. And you've commented before on the remains of the movie I'm sorry the movie from the novel the other Boleyn girl… and I know you had touched on the subject of perhaps Henry sleeping with not only marry and tiring of her but possibly with the mother in this version and I know it's not a 100% accurate Natalie Portman as Anne Boleyn But the confusion for me is that Henry seemed to favor Mary and she gave him an illegitimate son. And before that I know that Bessie Blount Gave birth to Henry Fitzroy so Henry VIII could show that he could indeed provide a male heir but I also heard that Mary Boleyn when he had tired of her did she not give birth to a son as well? And and was smarter and like you said was from the French court and knew how to draw his attention . With her wit her style of dress and the way she carried herself not wanting to be one of those women that just fell through Henry's fingers to be another mistress. But in the movie you see on going to the block to have her head cut off and you see her sister Mary in the audience watching reading a letter from king Henry saying that he could not spare Anne and if Mary ever came in front of his presence again it would be the worst for him. I'm wondering if you could clarify a little more. Thanks to reading the things that you have been putting on KZbin I go back and I re watched the tutors I re watch anything to do with this period previous and after. Also Seen the movie of the other Boleyn girl where their mother and father Thomas Boleyn and Jane Boleyn she gets mad at her husband and says all of my children are unhappy and he said you have wealth and privilege your whole life, but in the Mini series of the Tudors all you see is Thomas Boleyn as a power hungry and Ambitious man. And after Anne is beheaded Along with her brother and all the accomplices that were supposedly having these relationships with her They all are punished except for the man that actually did have had sex with her. How much is there to believe I know I'm touching on a lot of subjects but I ask you to watch the series the Spanish princess which shows Catherine of Aragon marrying Arthur and it is implied that they did consummate the relationship so if he was to marry his brother's wife Henry that is and everybody swore that she was a Virgin would he not have known when he slept with her the very 1st time it's a brand new series and it's full of knowledge I just want your input and I appreciate that I follow you all the time I'm rewatching the other Boleyn girl now because I've been watching Tudors and watching Elizabeth I with Cate Blanchett and then elizabeth the Golden Age .I watched Mary Queen of Scots The recent new Movie and her friendship with elizabeth and so many other little tidbits . There's still so much to learn but all of these things I'm wondering I think I believe the version of the tudors showtime series then as much as I believe the other Boleyn girl where Henry got so frustrated he had to force himself on and because he was in love with her. Thanks a lot

The Isle of Wight is far from where I live...but, my experience with islanders from Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island would lead me to believe the French underestimated the fierce independence and resourcefulness of islanders. That, and their loyalty and defiant patriotism would have made this a battle not easily won. I understand every man living on the Isle of Wight was required to have military training. Never underestimate people who survive on an island!

on their own i should imagine. Queen Elizabeth, was a bit slow coming forward to help the victors of the Armarda, so, I should think Henry would have been just the same. Cynical, but somethings never change.

Was the threat from this war the reason why Henry VIII had so many defensive fortifications. I wonder if he had built one on the isle of White or if he was planning to do so. ***On another note, does anyone know how to submit questions for Claire's Q&A sessions?***

Hey, what would be interesting for 2020 is a "happened/never happened/sort of happened" series between factual Tudor events and dramatizations over the years. Just a thought!
