Caribbean (Jamaican) native here 🖐🏾 Jumbee (or Duppy, in Jamaica) can be spirits of the dead, as well as neither wholly or particularly the spirit of the deceased. They are liminal entities that straddle the physical and spiritual worlds. They all often still do have a common association with death, however. That is to say they tend to show up close to the time of a person's death, whether prior to or afterwards. In Jamaica and other countries, we even have funerary traditions pertaining to both preventing the interference of jumbees or preventing the spirit of the deceased from becoming jumbees themselves. Of the former category of jumbees (the disruptive ones), those are considered evil spirits. The latter are more like ghosts in the typical sense, that is, spirits of the dead who haven't moved on.
