Legendary boat. Mattys brother taught me nearly everything in my late teenage years

You're right about that. I used to fish off that boat when it brand new back in the 70's. Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn. It was a super cruiser compared to the other boats at the time. Engines were very quiet.

The fluke fishing looks great here. Sorry to say, but I had my worst fishing experience on the Helen H. It was when she came to Montauk to sail for cod one winter. Arrived at the boat 3 hrs. before sailing and was told that they would board by the order of your reservation!! When I made my reservation by phone this "BOARDING BY ORDER OF RESERVATION" was never discussed!! I waited for 3 hrs. and boarded an overloaded boat with no place for my cooler and gear. Everyone was basically "shoehorned" shoulder to shoulder with no room to move!! People were asking for refunds so they could board other boats and were told no refunds would be given. It was the last time she came to Montauk for cod.

They need to get some long handle nets on that boat! Not a fan of gaffing fluke! Just easier to net them! Just my opinion!
@ChrisMcIntee6 жыл бұрын
I hear ya. pros and cons - nets get tangled with those teasers so bad, but gaffing leaves no option to release a trophy, and sticking a fluke with a gaff isnt a piece of cake either, there were decent fish lost at the gaff a couple times. mates had their hands full the whole time, net tangles is probably crippling so I can see why they dont use nets.

Who gaffs Fluke ?🤦♂️🤦♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
@action-packedadventures40563 жыл бұрын
The boat has a high gunnel, and there is no net long enough to reach down to the fish if it is a keeper. That’s why they have a small gaff on a long handle to get the fish into the boat. It is a substitute for a net.
@BarryHenry6 жыл бұрын
The mates where very disrespectful on the Helen H both times i been this year. Fishing was great. Mates where borderline racist. And I hate pulling the race card. But they didn’t know how to talk to people who spend their hard earned money just to have a good time.
@RikkiTikkiTavi2906 жыл бұрын
Thats pretty much all mates that work on party fishing boats in my experience. I started out working on one years and years ago and the other mates were so damn nasty I quit in less than two weeks and went straight to working on real charter boats. Don't know what it is, but other than the odd nice guy, the mates on party boats never fail to piss me off.

They should invest in a few nets with a gaff u loose a lot more fish
@ChrisMcIntee6 жыл бұрын
Definitely. I see why they use the gaff though as the teasers/rigs get tangled in the nets so bad, crew had their hands full the whole time untangling as it was, but youre right, there were some decent fish lost at the gaff.
@hensleyshobbies-doug77616 жыл бұрын
Wow! That was cool, that big ole sunfish! They do kinda remind me of a gigantic freshwater sunny ( bluegill or something)! lol! Hey, yeah, on those party boats or whatever, who cleans all the fish that everybody catches and keeps? Or do they give a lot of the fish away to some place? Like a shelter or soup kitchen or something??
@ChrisMcIntee6 жыл бұрын
the mates fillet them on the way back to the dock, some guys keep them whole to clean themselves when they get home, often for sashimi
@hensleyshobbies-doug77616 жыл бұрын
Sea-Money Fishing - oh ok! I thought maybe they give some of them away to the Shelters or whatever! I saw a fishing show on TV once where they were out on one of those boats and about all the fish they caught, they give to a shelter or soup kitchen, but I think that was out in California somewhere, don’t remember exactly?! But great show again brother!
@ChrisMcIntee6 жыл бұрын
thanks, I think a lot of meat from offshore tournaments gets donated to shelters and food banks but on this trip everyone took home their catch.

Sea-Money Fishing - that’s cool! Yes indeed man!
@mikecurtis11116 жыл бұрын
Why do you put your conventional rod together with the tip eyes rotated to the bottom side? Also, do you pay extra to reserve a spot off the bow of the boat? Seems like if it was first come first serve, that spot would have been taken before you woke up.
@mikecurtis11116 жыл бұрын
Disregard the comment about the guides. I see the rod is actually designed that way. Seems kinda dumb to intentionally route the guides so the line doesn't stay in a straight line from the reel to the tip of the rod. Can't imagine what the manufacturer's rationale is, other than trying to be different just to be different. Seems gimmicky since it serves no practical purpose.
@robertgerber25336 жыл бұрын
I saw a rod like that on a rack in a tackle store and thought that it was a defect or something.

What's up with your guides? 2:03
@usobninja146 жыл бұрын
I believe they wrap around the rod as u get to the end, so it starts guides up by the reel and than turns down towards the water, just the style of the nexus rods, not sure but there’s probably some benefit to doing so
@ChrisMcIntee6 жыл бұрын
thats an acid wrap/spiral wrap. It is a popular way to wrap your guides for bottom fishing, has som advantage over regular style guides.
@alejandro34856 жыл бұрын
U know when u hook a monster on a traditional conventional setup the reel tends to want to spin sideways left and right. The acid wrap guides prevent that like how it never happens in a spinning rod.
