I really dig the direction you’re going with these “tutorials “ i especially like how you emphasize the standards on what “counts” and what does not...where other trick tip tutorials show a breakdown of the trick and how and why your body’s position matters... you tackle the abstract (I guess u could call it that)... what I see as equally important is the standard... I don’t skate with really anyone these days but when I talk rollerblading with anyone near my age (35) about it we usually have the same ideas about how tricks should be/look... like u mentioned no written rules about these things but a “cultural standard” of how they should be executed and how they should look... sorry for the super long comment... lol to sum it up... these videos are awesome and I agree there is not nearly enough content for the amount of information about rollerblading in this facet

Definitely don't apologize for the length of this message, it means a lot to read this message. Thank you! I'm around the same age, so I'm assuming we've both seen a lot of trends come and go, but there are core standards that have stood the test of time. Things like what you posted here makes making things like this feel more meaningful. Thank you dude!!!

@@jumboblading absolutely... there are so many variables to how and why things are the way they are but the standard have always remained... I unfortunately never had many friends that bladed but that being said I guess I always stressed these “unwritten rules” in my own skating... I could easily say that probably 75% of my skating during a good session “don’t count” with the metric being what it is... this is also why I rarely ever post content of my own... that and I honestly believe I’m the only person who rollerblades in my area so it makes it kinda tough to get good flicks or even have someone to give feed back... bladers are a rare breed nowadays hopefully more will start up..which is why I think your approach to these videos are not only entertaining... but important for people returning or just coming in to it... I’m definitely not anything special when it comes to it but have been around long enough to at least have what i consider a valid opinion when it comes to the subject...

I saw on ur IG that u frequent New Orleans next time u go take a pit stop in lake Charles... 2 hurricanes in one year have made an interesting impact on the city as far as skating goes... the rest of the impact just sucked haha but at least as far as skating goes it gave it much more

The Colonel is back! Good stuff, mistrial is a trick I battle every time to try and get right. I think a good mistrial is one of my favourite looking and feeling tricks, when you're locked, boot down, feet together, squatting with those harsh angled legs 😍 You've got to have the right trousers otherwise you're ripping that crotch wide open! Thanks for another tutorial, I really do enjoy the content you've put out. In depth skate talk is definitely my jam 🙌

Hahaha, pants commentary is spot on! I barely have the hip mobility too. I wish someone would have told me how to stretch when I was a kid, because lack of elasticity definitely effects your ability to do certain tricks in our space. Thank you for the kind words dude! I just recently got my 10 year old daughter a oair of skates and teaching her how to skate has been a blast. Because of her I fixed my OG 5th elements and hopefully one day I'll teach her how to grind... Keep it up!!

I find it pretty funny how you teach blading rules more or less between the lines (go to the end, jump so and so..) - even though that`s textbook knowledge and i`m behind that, don`t be too strict. Style or rather "that way of skating" is something that comes naturally if people stick to blading because they found out how much fun it is.
@jumboblading

I 100% agree. I know the way that I talk sometimes comes off as "gatekeeper-ey." I'm going to eventually do a video that explains the point of this channel, which is to just document the averages and consistencies we've seen across the past few decades of skating. The kind of skating that's stood the test of time. When it comes to actual skating though, for sure, do whatever is fun. Master it until it becomes your own. Do everything different and change the game, I'm here for it. But my goal here is to just document what "regular ol' skating" is for the new comers. As for things being textbook knowledge... I thought the same thing until recently. There is such a big wave of new comers, rollerskating trends bleeding over, and there's no documentation for what blading culture is and represents. I might not be doing the best job of it... But I'm trying to at least put some of the ideas on paper. Thank you for you reply btw, I really do appreciate every word. I'm going to try my best in the future to not be so black and white.

I think with future TUT+'s it would be better to frame the "rules" for a trick's "proper" execution as being there not really to judge if your trick "counts" or not, but more as representing a goal or ideal version of that trick to strive towards. I think this framing is much friendlier, and gets the point across without getting too gatekeeper-ey. If someone is at the moment doing a trick "incorrectly", that's fine, so long as they're aware of it, and are working on perfecting the trick. Or, alternatively, are aware of the common justifications (as silly as they often are) for the "standards" that they're violating, but simply disagree or don't care. Basically, if you're doing a trick "wrong", do it consciously, not just out of ignorance. But yea, another great episode, love watching these. I'd love to see one on why it's wack when back-torque-based people learn "switch topsouls" which are really just top torque souls (which are really just their back-torque foot doing the work) that they slide the front foot out into a topsoul after locking. Or why front torques are so much harder and sicker than back torques. Or why it's important on pornstars to keep your back foot tucked in and tight against your soul foot.
@jumboblading
@jumboblading 3 жыл бұрын
You're super right about how I should frame it. There are rules, but if it's your first time learning something, you should be juiced about any sort of progress. No one laces everything perfect every single time (and if you do, you're boring, haha). I'm not at all even trying to say that if you don't lace it perfect, you should be discouraged. I just want to define the averages of expectations. I think I speak to "normally" to the camera and I give the audience the same flack I'd give my friends, but if you don't know me I can definitely come off "gatekeeper-ey" (not always a bad thing though). I don't want to call learning torque based tricks wack, because I just learned a bunch of backslide stuff that way too, lol. I think everything can be sick if you do it right. We did discuss "top-torque soul to topsoul" type stuff in the topsoul video I did. I'm absolutely going to do a video over pornstar. That's going to be a fun one, just because of the debate about the name. Thank you for your thoughtful commentary Al! You're the man

I feel seen on that torque based switch topsoul. It did help me learn it proper by overcoming the fear of putting weight on my switch soul foot and learn it proper. I think it's ok to use torque based topsouls as a tool to reach the goal of a real switch topsoul.

@@valoroll1 Yea totally! I wasn't really clear, I think learning switch topsoul via top torque soul is fine, it's just annoying when people don't finish the process and continue to just do top torque soul, but call it a switch topsoul.

Nice explanation here. I’ve been doing sloppy mistrials all the time. They were usually more like a Miszou-to-mistrial while grinding and can tell this looks and feels really silly. But I’m getting better with there actually locking boot-down from the beginning :) it’s Hard to unlearn sloppy habits to all I can suggest is: learn it properly from the beginning !

Would love to see a mizu one. I want a breakdown on the proper spelling as well and whether or not spelling it 'mizou' counts as landing it. I would say absolutely not. But also, Mizu's have the potential to look so, so good but rarely do. Only a very small handful of good ones ever done.
@jumboblading
@jumboblading 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s hard to think of relevant mizous off the top of my head. I think it’s a sick trick. It’s framed as “easy” but it’s pretty wild if you do it on the right obstacle. As for the spelling… I’ve always seen it spelled as “mizou,” but I know the word “mizu” is an actual word in Japanese. I’ll have to look into that.

I definitely grew up like that. Small town, the only other people that skated were new like me. The internet didn't exist and all we had was one page in a daily bread that would do "trick tips" like "lock your feet on the rail." or "land with steez." I've actually quoted that last one in one of my videos before because I remembered it from way back before.. But thank you for the commentary. I'm going to keep it going when I heal.

should you start off learning grinds by using an anti rocker set up, or flat?
@jumboblading
@jumboblading 3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what you're skating and/or how you like to skate. If you're skating a lot of skateparks and transition, I think skating flat would be more fun for that type of situation. If you're skating a lot of rough ledges and street spots, anti-rocker may be a bit easier toughing through some of the early learning processes. Both options are good. If you're skating flat, I'd be a bit more mindful of the frame that you're using. You can skate anti on just about every frame, but if you want a positive experience skating flat, definitely shop around for a setup that's made for 8 wheels.

@@jumboblading what kind of frames would you recommend? I'm currently using THEM frames with 8 wheels
@jumboblading
@jumboblading 3 жыл бұрын
@@garrettohyeah7365 I haven't gotten to spend a lot of time on the Them frames, but I have skated them briefly. I think they provide enough wheel protection for flat if you wanted to try it, but I'd definitely put some smaller wheels in there. Nothing larger than 58mm. If your focus is for grinding, 55mm - 58mm is a good bet.

Off topic: you seem to prefer the Sebas from the Adapts. Is there a specific reason for that?
@jumboblading
@jumboblading 2 жыл бұрын
They’re both great skates. I still skate the soul plate from adapts on the Sebas. Whenever I skate plastic frames, I’ll also use their frames too. But I like the seba boot better for two reasons: I like that little plastic piece they put on the side of the boot, right above the soul plate and I like the plastic cuff. I think it makes flexing just a bit better. They’re both great skates though.

How about video that talk about all the different 'grind families'? I know that stuff can be a little daunting for the newbs. An entire video could go to just mizou variations. Sweatstance, true mizou, mistrial, ally-oop, misfit, ect... I have an AO negative Mistrial I do, and have no idea what that should be called, seeing that every other variation has a name. Then move on to breakdown soul grind variations, and progressions.
