Gifting outposts to independents has actually been working really well for me. I'll give them one territory while I grab the territories around, and then they develop the city a little bit until my city cap is ready to handle it. Then I can then use military, but I like to use influence to also get the 10+ pop from all the random units they end up producing.

I'm so envious of those Blitz-speed Dunnus. At 16 influence, they pay for themselves in eight turns and are powerhouses! I've been playing on Slow speed these days, and Dunnus cost 56 Influence to buy out. 😵 Still love me those fast Raiders, though. Even on Slow speed, I exterminated a medium/distant neighbour before either of us learned Copper.

My neighbors in my current game had a similar start, where he got like 7 dye deposits almost immediately. He was Zhou and had NO stability problems for a VERY long time, plus a lot of industry ofc. an unfare start I was lucky to survive the early war on me, I had a bit of obsidian but not a natural wonder the entire game. Anyway as Assyrians I like to hang around the neolithic area, find a territory with horses (you lucked into one so that's cool) than ascend and disband a few scouts to turn them into early horse riders and set outposts/ donu up all day. The BEST influence culture you can start with IMO. I'd not played Myceneans but I wonder if they'd be similar if you take the same mindset... they take a bit longer to get a horseman though, and they don't have +1 speed... but I wonder if this'd be all that much of a difference. Having all this influence generation allows you to EASILY go over city cap though! If you take the Ac Persians (I stopped at Ac cuz... I have no idea where to go from there lol) you could get 8 cities without a second thought!

This highlights one of my reservations about Humankind, or pretty much any 4X game: the features in/around your starting position have as much (if not more) impact on your chances of success as the soundness of your strategy. Wish there was some way to ensure the RNG could do a better job of equalizing the distribution of resources on the starting map to ensure a more balanced game.

i feel like of all the 4x this one does the best job tho, the chance of a bad start is a lot lowered since taking a little longer doesn't penalize you much as you get more pops. The only really sad starts are bad land and no hunts to make up for it, which feels rare than other 4x bad starts.

@@emylily8266 Agree, it's a bit better than most other 4Xs, but I still think there's room for a bit of improvement (and based on the changes they're implementing this month I think they realize that as well - which is a great sign!) .
