I’ve had a Kobalt battery for almost 6 months that refused to charge. Light turned red on the charger and nothing. Today, another one wouldn’t do anything, no lights at all. Did your truck to both for about 15 seconds each battery and now they are both on the charger charging correctly! Thanks so much!

I just did this too my "duff" 9amp milwaukee battery, using a 5amp one. A short piece of 2.5mm house ring main cable stripped each end, with red/black for positive and negative. This type of wire is very stiff so ideal for pushing into the terminals. I didn't bother with a fuse. Went for broke and after about 15 minutes the 9amp is now working fine, with 3 red lights on it. The 5amp had only 3 lights originally, but didn't get less than this. It works fine aswell. I will see if the 9amp will perform as normal, but I have bought a replacement anyway, as they always come in handy on site. If it is only a temporary fix, i will update this post soon. Stay safe people, electricity isn't something to play with, even if it's 'only' a battery.

Those packs should have 5 18650’s at nominal voltage of 3.6 x 5 = 18v. 18650 batteries are charged up to 4.2V and down to between 2V and 3V depending on the cell's specification for cut-off voltage. To be safe, never discharge lower than 3.0V (15v all together) Unfortunately you’re gonna have to keep and monitor that battery above 15v because it’s dropping below the threshold. The charger won’t charge in that area for protection, no biggie, just gotta mark that battery with a pen so you know not to drain the piss out of it..

@HOODLIFTER 2 жыл бұрын
The correct answer is 2.7 volts, that is where the protection circuit cut off voltage is set. Charging the pack at a higher voltage then that will not trip the protection circuit. 3 volts as you stated will keep the pack going, but lithium batteries can and should be charged after use, as they will charge fully regardless of their state of discharge. Fred.
@HOODLIFTER
@HOODLIFTER 2 жыл бұрын
M18 battery pack when fully charged will be 21 volts. Chances are that pack will go down again to 15 volts. This means that only four cells are good. 4 volts nominal voltage each. One cell is going bad sooner or later. The cells in that pack are rated @ 3.6 volts that is why they are labeled 18volts. They will charge to 4.2volts each, so the pack will be 21volts fully charged.

My Original battery set up that came in a kit was doing the exact same thing upon opening on first use and through out a few times of me replacing it upon the charger I realized that it would do that when both batteries were on the mount at the same time when I would remove one it would stop and the other would charge and Visa versa for the opposite side

I just bought a M18 fluid pump and it's a high drain tool. I have several batteries but 1 older battery would not charge after I used it on my pump. I checked voltage with my meter (13.2vdc). The M18 charger must be a smart charger and not try to charge a battery below a certain voltage. I will try your jump start trick. I tried using 2 8D batteries in my generator but must push a lot of amps because it smoked my negative wire within 5 seconds! lol

This is only a temporary fix, most likely you have 1 or 2 cells developing dendrites which are small short circuits in the cell itself, if you keep all the batteries that are going bad you can generally save some good cells until you have enough to fix the best of the buggered up ones, unless of course they're still covered by warranty. I have been doing this for years and saved myself a lot of money.

Some higher-end batteries have internal intelligence for charge control and status monitoring, in which case the third pin is for communications. That third contact is connected to an internal thermistor, enabling the charger to measure the battery temperature. In mobile phones, some Li+ battery packs have 3 terminals.

The cells within the batteries could quite possibly be dead or a connection could have a short, there many possibilities that batteries in general would stop working. Age could also be a factor.
