I'm thinking the Nirvana N14 with the multi-protocol module would be the ticket. But the t12 plus with hall gimbles and the price sounds good. I just finished with two surgeries and been wanting Er thinking of getting into drones. I have flown RC helis, airplanes , cars, rock crawlers, boats. Kind of done it all except drones. Oh, well except when DJI first came out I got o e and was bored with it. I'm trying to sell my cars so I can get into drones. Anyway Josh, thanks for the review. Keep up the hard work.

I honestly prefer the T8SG Plus. I like that the multi-protocol module is internal plus Deviation is much more intuitive to use. I've used both OpenTX and Deviation and it's just easier to navigate. Also, I'm an adult and I like the size of these Jumper radios. After flying with the X-Lite for a little while the larger gimbals of the T8SG Plus are refreshing. I don't even use my QX7 anymore because it's so massive. Also, Crossfire is now supported on Deviation and while it doesn't support Lua scripts the new TBS Agent will let you configure your transmitter on your desktop. Now we're just waiting for R9 support.

Whiffles , McOoz FPVish I've got a question for you: I just got into FPV. Got a Mobula7 and a T8SG V2. In Betaflight Configurator's Modes tab only Aux 1 and 2 are recognized. Are the rest detected for you? Right now it's rather limiting the modes I can add - Beeping being one of them.

Love my Jumper T8SG. Perfect size for using thumbs, compact for the backpack, connects to every multirotor I've ever bought, and inexpensive. Sounds like this model is a solid upgrade on it.

Its easier to keep openTX Updated with how they executed the hardware.. All they do is use open TX to output PPM and Serial to the modules. If the RF chips where inside that would be a nightmare and alot of work to get right and keep it updated. This way their devs can keep everything running quite easily.

I have all the Jumpers. T8sg, T8SGv2, T12v2 and im in love. I love the form factor and in most cases prefer Deviation to OpenTX. I bought the first one because I thought I could just buy the cheapest receiver option for BNFs but i don't swing that way no more. As much as they are loved...I might switch to X-Lite.

I recently bought a multiprotocol module for my Q X7 because I got a brushless whoop that only runs international FrSky protocols. All my bigger quads are running FrSky EU-LBT and that way I don't have to flash my radio everytime I go whoopin. All the other protocols are a nice-to-have and might be useful for future purchase decisions.

I didn't realise how tiny those gimbals were until you showed it next to a 'normal' sized radio. I really like how thin my Turnigy TGY-i10 TX is, on the odd occasion I use my old Cheerson CX-20 GPS quad with its TX, the bulkiness feels weird. Want to get a Nirvana TX but unsure how good/stable the firmware is right now, maybe next year.

Yah, but the sticks on the Xlite are no good, .,, they simply don't have enough play, , and there is really no work around, or mod to correct it, At least the jumpers have longer, and deeper sticks and gimbles.

The size of the Taranis radios is a disadvantage for me. My hands are normal size and the T8SG plus I'm using suites me perfectly. My buying decision for that radio was based on where I started from. My first radio was a Turnigy Evolution but I found that the range was inferior. Because I had a bunch of Flysky receivers, the T8SG Plus gave me the flexibility to keep using Flysky and also experiment with FrSky if I wanted to. The physical size is important to me as I like the easy transportation, I tend to bundle all my gear into a backpack and jump on a push bike and go fly so a small light radio suits.

Well, I have had my Jumper T12 plus for about two weeks. Still learning OpenTx. However, with this radio I have noticed a throttle calibration problem between BetaFlight and the Tx. The radio is full normal range like any other TX. What 900 to 2000 input. Think I'm off. But Betaflight says the Tx is not going through the full range. Maybe there is a communication problem or just a calibration problem. Still, I have a Hudsan? Reciver on a fpv glider, and the Spectrum Rx on two planes. Also, I'm building a 2.5 FPV Maximus frame with a Flysky RX. And so far no issues with the multiprotocal module. I like the small tx and the easy portability of the tx. Plus, Im a thumber, not a pincher. So I am not bumping the switches. When you do firmware updates you just download the QX7 firmware to your sd card. And plug it back into the T12. And your off and running. Now Josh brings up its just better to get the Taranis than the T12. Hell the T12 runs on QX7 OpenTx firmware anyway. My thing is I dont like following the crowd and I like the T12 and what it offers. And I used to be a Spectrum guy.

I have the old T8SG and it fits to my hands way better than a bigger transmitter. And yes the multiprotocoll-option was important because i've started with walkeera-models and don't wanted to change the receivers or even could not. So now i'm using flysky and frsky and walkeera receivers which works fine. Deviation is ok for me and after the review from UAV futures i'm not convinced that the T12 is worth a change, while the T8-Plus-version is. Maybe it is possible to swap the gimbals with hal-gimbals which are made for some other transmitter, but i don't know the sizes of those.

Been a Spektrum DX7s user from the start, bought the T12 because I am an Electrical Engineer and love to tinker and wanted OpenTX. I like being able to buy the smaller inexpensive RXs, which ever is on sale without being constrained to one protocol. I screwed the sticks out to lengthen them, and as a thumber I'm very comfortable with the fit now. I have ordered the Hall-effect gimbals now that they are available separately and look forward to the slow boat arrival soon! Overall, I feel like I got my money's worth and am very satisfied with the T12.

I just finished binding my T12 with crossfire micro... test coming soon. Looks like some ok TN weather the next few days! However I have 2 Jumper T8sg radios gen1 and the plus... I used to be a spectrum guy all my foamy planes are DSMx or 2. My first quad was an inductrix. When I won a Gen1 babyhawk from a KZbin reviewer it was frsky xm+ that’s when I tried the Jumper. I love it. Almost 2 years with no issues at all. 19 aircraft bond to it and flyable even my Jessie P tiny whoop racer!!! The size took a little getting used to and a little is the right term. My Gen1 TS8G has 4 times the stick time as my DX9i and still out performs all three of my prior spectrum radios. OPENTX is taking some getting used to. Josh I watch your video on settings up the CF micro tx with the CF nano all went well cept the very last part after discover Sensors. The L09-L-11 stuff and the next page was way different. Nevertheless I will fly soon and post my findings. I may just buy a Qx7 for my crossfire quads. If it works like I hear most of my quads will go cross fire! God bless!

Don't forget you will have to mod the qx7 to use crossfire unless frsky has corrected this problem.

I’m glad you reminded me about the Qx7 almost bought one on RCgroup. Wonder how all the Taranis snobs... couch couch JB... feel about the “cheap junk radio” doing it better than the Qx7??? All in fun I think it’s more of what you get used to.

You didn't mention the IRange module for the QX7 either, been running that for a couple of years now for both toy quads and toy planes like WL Toys, wicked fun little planes for like 35-50 bucks. I've taught kids to fly these little planes with my QX7 and it great. Even the worst crash 50 bucks.... Can't beat that.!

I like the small size, but I put longer gimbal sticks on it. And I'm a thumber. Also put taranis springs in for a little better tension. But I might go with a multi-prorocol module in a taranis in the future.

I am new to the hobby and I bought one believing that it will be my transmitter for a while. The main reason why I bought this was that it is a multiprotocol radio. In the meantime i realized that it was a mistake. The radio itself looks a ok, considering the price itself. My problem is with its gimbals. They are not very accurate, making my learning curve a little bit difficult. As i said the biggest advantage was the multiprotocol thing around the radio... now i realized that it is not a unique thing. You just need an external module and you can convert your Taranis into a multiprotocol radio as well. The good thing is that I can reuse it’s 4in1 module in a new radio. I wish your video was released earlier. You could save some money for me :)

I decided to get the nv14 (nirvana) with an r9m, upgrading from my fs i6x, atm to me the nirvana seems to be the way to go, in terms future proofing and ergonomics, apparantly i bus is faster than s bus too, and stuff like the digital gimbals seems pretty good, btw @Joshua Bardwell , can you make a follow up video for the nirvana?

Love my T8SG plus, having that multiprotocol module built in is a boon. Deviation I have grown to enjoy using. Added the voice option too :) I use Fresky , FrSky receivers mainly but have a few of the toy grade quadcopters that I can also bind to. Cross fire maybe in the future because the T8SG plus has a free JR bay just waiting to be filled :)

Thank you for your brilliant videos Joshua. I'm new to the hobby and they are invaluable. I'm thinking of getting the Jumper T12 as my first TX. The local RC club I'm joining uses a buddy box system and use a Spektrum TX. Both the Spektrum and the Jumper have 1/8" Jacks for the buddy system. Are they compatible to use together to buddy up for training? (The trainer plane will have a Spektrum receiver onboard). Thanking you in anticipation. Rob from the UK.

Both buddybox systems output PPM signals, so it's likely they will work. However I can't be 100% sure.

I use a multi protocol module in an x9d+ because the antenna had been ripped from the internal module. Got the TX for £30 and bought a multi protocol module off someone for £20. Was very handy because I was on flysky ar the time. Even more handy because I'm in the UK and it means it's a bit easier to deal with the FCC/LBT-EU mess. I've since fixed the internal antenna (chopped one off an RX and soldered it to the tiny bit of trace that was left) and that's working okay. Still handy to have the multi protocol module for that one flysky quad I have, and the Matek F411-ONE with built in receiver is FCC protocol...

Do you have a 5db antenna to try with the T12? The antenna on the T12 is very small and would probably benefit from a 5db or higher antenna.

That's incorrect. My Taranis has a 2 dBi antenna same as the jumper.

Just because the radio has a removable antenna doesn't mean you must use a 5 dBi antenna on it. The Taranis SE comes with removable antenna and 2 dBi antenna. It would be silly to run the test with different antenna gains. I am running the test with the stock antenna on both radios.

good review man...just wanted to say use 2s battery youll get more range...compared to lower voltage of AA batterys.. also the scroll wheels on the side.. they do have a center position...you can barely feel the middle stop position.. but it is there...and the one you reviewed is the cheaper one.. the black one has the hall gimbals...for like 20 dollars more..and like any other product.. change that antenna.. stock antennas are crap...and also them gimbals can be loosened or tightened to your needs...and did you charge that 2s battery for the test? it showed 4.9 volts...or was that AA batteries?

Hint: you get hall gimbals and longer sticks for some money. Tip: be careful using AA batteries in the "cage" you get when it's delivered. After a bumb or shock against the TX they might "jump out" from there and you loose energy and model ... I had that. But I love it, though I've a colossal heavy and comfy and worthy Jeti Duplex as "main" TX. For smaller models I use the Jumper, because there are so many cheap RX you can buy. And I use it, when flying in the dunes, where I might ruin the gimbals and switches of my Jeti :-)

I would assume those are based on the position of some aux switch but honestly I don't know which aux channel and positions would control that so it would be a bit of trial and error.

Yes the Hubsan transmitter for it has a 2 position rate switch and a 3 position mode switch. Its just such a piece of crap the sticks especially the throttle stick has no feel to it at all.

Hi Joshua I have looked everywhere in the manual and on the Jumper website. Do you by chance happen to know what button on the T12 starts video recording when you have a micro sd card in your drone or does this transmitter not record video. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm kind of confused. The T12 doesn't have any video interface at all. It has nothing to do with the video. What on the drone are you trying to make record video? Where is the micro SD card? In the FC? That one is for blackbox logging. You would need an HD camera or a separate DVR to record video.

The Hubsan H123d has a 720 camera with its standard transmitter you just press record on the transmitter. I guess what your saying is the T12 can't tell the quad to record like its standard transmitter. Even though the sd card is in the drone. This can be a very confusing hobby to new flyers.

This transmitter is really not good at all for lower level quads. I see its designed for quads that use a gopro camera. The fpv camera is used only for flying in the quads you fly vs lower level quads who's fpv camera does double duty.

Hi Joshua, I recently bought one of the 4in1 modules for my X9D+ and after updating the firmware to get the multi protocol feature it works fine. A friend noticed in my radio and asked if it would work in his old JR 35 mHz radio and I said yes I would think so because you can select the protocol using a rotary switch on the back. In the instructions it gives the positions of the rotary switch and whether or not the green light should be on for each protocol and this where I got stuck. I can't find how to turn the green light off in order to bind with Spectrum or Futaba for instance. In the instructions it say I should select 0 and press the bind button when I initially turn on and this will cycle the green light on and off but it doesn't seem to work. Am I missing something?

To be honest, I have never used the multiprotocol module except in an OpenTX radio with full software support. I have never used the dial on the back at all.

I have the original t8sg with deviation, it is my first "hobby grade" radio and I have never felt the need to upgrade it. I use it to fly toy grade quads, tuny whoops, the quad I built, several planes, and even some cars and hovercrafts I have / made. There are very few rc items that I can't bind to, usually weird one off toy grade cheap toys. The only complaint I have is how annoying it is to change models in deviation. It is seriously like 8 clicks to bring up the list of models.

Yes, definitely you can use the multiprotocol module in the Taranis. You need to select the "multi" option when you download the firmware, and flash the Taranis with the "multi" option-enabled firmware. So if you simply drop the module into the Taranis it won't work with the stock firmware.

I've got an Eachine Wizard with two batteries and some Eachine Ev800D. Which I bought myself because I saved Christmas and Birthday money. But I'd say I'm experienced enough to want to upgrade. Goggle? That would be nice getting rid of my box goggles. Radio? Well, I want to get some tiny woops but my radio is a cheap of all cheap fly sky and well, tiny whoops normally don't come with fly sky receivers and most tiny whoops can't have their receivers changed. So that is the problem. Get rid of my nauseating box goggle and still be stuck with the same RTF outdated kwad. Or get a decent radio with actual decent range and be able to get multiple kwads with the same radio. Also, 89 dollars or 300 for some EV200D. I can't get fatsharks because hell no to spending 600 dollars on some goggles.

Hi I have a Chinese plane which I broke the reciever pcb if I buy a similar reciever pcb how to know the the reciever stuff to connect the transmitter controller too am I on the right track with my thinking. HomeGrownCanadian I too have a fleet of JR radios, but finding bnfly micros finally got me to buy a X9 mini just for them. Spectrum stuff is harder to find.... but love my full size JR for my giant scale aircraft. That is until the FAA makes us stop flying "...........

Hey Joshua Bardwell not sure what other radios you have tried but I was wondering if you have tried any radios that are larger... I happen to be one of those folks that seem to have Ogre hands, well maybe not quite but I feel they are bigger than most others hands. I am a Thumber and I currently have a DX7 Gen 2 and I don't like the way it feels in my hands. It just doesn't fit me well. I tried a friends DX9 and it felt better than mine but still kinda small and I have also had my hands on a X9D and it a little better in my hands but I think it was smaller than my DX7. For reference the last radio I can think of that I had in my hands a Futaba 9 CHP Radio for my Heli's back in the day when 72Mhz PCM Radios were the norm. Any help you can provide would be helpful thanks

Regarding the module working in other transmitters; I'm glad I stayed around till the end. I was asking myself that question for about 20 minutes while watching the video. It really makes the module the story here, not the transmitter. I would argue it makes the J12 less desirable overall since there's not really any reason to buy it (it's a "radio" with NO radio). Just buy the module for 40 bucks, stick it in your favorite compatible transmitter and fly all those obscure models.

This is an option if you already own a radio. But for somebody starting out from scratch, the T12 is a compelling purchase since it comes with the module "free". Some people even like the T12 (go figure).

If you mean the power or ground pad, then you can try soldering to one of the other ESC pads, but it's possible you will draw too much current and fry the board. If you mean a signal pad, you can remap one motor output to LEDStrip using this technique: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKrWgXuubLd_b9U

Energizer rechargeables are relatively decent. Nothing like lipos but I get about 4 hours of flight before my Qx7 starts yelling at me.

Also the qx7 is so tuff i think might be one of the most durable i have beat mine up so bad and it still works so good i started with the qx7 and love dont need nothing else lol but good review the jumper is definitely interesting

Back before the Taranis existed, the Walkera Devo line of radios were the ones to have for quads. Deviation open source firmware was originally designed for those transmitters, and as best I can tell the Jumper is either a clone or copy of the Devos. We started hacking in transmitter modules from other toy quad transmitters to get more protocols, then smart folks invented the multi-protocol module. All of this was open source, then the modules started showing up on places like Banggood without proper attribution. (Hopefully Jumper is doing the open source modules and OpenTX stuff properly!) Deviation isn't that bad, just different, and not nearly as powerful as OpenTX. But, the radios weren't that powerful either so it was still awesome compared to something like Spektrum programming.

Just to add a little more history, this was around the time Soma was inventing the Warp Quad, racing quads looked more like a flying school bus, and the fun toys were "Franken Quads" built with brushed motors. We used the NanoQX FC and cheap Banggood parts to make all kinds of fun.

great video as always josh, my roommate has this TX and i would say personally do not use AA's whatsoever, the AA's sag immediately down to around the 5-6v range and the stock alarm sounds immediately. lipo is well worth the extra 10-15$.

@@JoshuaBardwell i adjusted it to its lowest for him to use without being annoyed by it to start, but he now has a lipo and it does read proper voltage with the lipo. Unsure if it really was dying that quick or not but better safe then sorry and worth mentioning. Something else worth mentioning is i had to take his left gimbal apart down to the bare hardware and molds to clean flashing out of the yaw axis it wasn't too hard as I have worked on gimbals in the past but less then ideal for a beginner.

isn't it just jumper radio being set to warn you with higher rssi ? The correct test would be to fly till fail safe kicks in then compare range... Also qx7 doesn't support full speed crossfire
