Thanks !! For the good sounding intro in older versions you need to play and tune it like this. The sound of the intro in old versions has been a mystery until this video ! Thanks ! And yes, he is just using openG, 5 strings and capo these days. But then the great sounding old intro is impossible.

Open E is correct tuning for the record. Later for live he switched to Tele's and Open G capoed at the 4th.What I am trying to find out is how he played it in 1969 at Madison Square Garden

To clarify: The gold guitar used at the beginning of the video to show that the song is in open E tuning is a Duesenberg. The sunburst guitar used for the lesson is a Vox SSC55.

Where's part 2??? Great to have some insight into the original version, sounds better than any other version, Stones are tuned between E and D# so constantly have to retune when playing along with the original or with this version..still very helpful tho so thanks :)

Keith began using Open G (capo 4) on "Jumpin' Jack Flash" after Ry Cooder introduced him to the tuning in 1969. This lesson reflects the original studio recording from 1968 when Open E was still Keith's most frequently used open tuning ("Street Fighting Man," "Gimme Shelter," etc.).

"Jumpin' Jack Flash" had always been a mystery to figure out the proper way(s) of playing the riff and different parts. Open E tuning has always been suspected for the opening riff, and the distorted half acoustic/half electric guitar sound, which is equally important, has never been able to be replicated again; not even by Keith himself. (The same holds true for the "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" guitar riff.) Alas, at the end of the day, "Jumpin' Jack Flash" uses different guitar tracks on the record played with different tunings, and has also evolved played live by Keith Richard, Brian Jones (for what it's worth), Mick Taylor and Ron Wood. Early on, Keith can be seen playing the song with an uncapoed guitar in what appears to be standard tuning as seen in the the 1968 ROLLING STONES ROCK AND ROLL CIRCUS performance. (Brian also appears to playing in standard tuning.) By the time of the 1969 Hyde Park Concert, Keith had already switched to playing in his adopted open G tuning capoed at the 4th fret to put him in open B. But the opening riff on the record was completely scrapped and never, ever played live, which is a shame because it's so great.
@trampforthelord6 жыл бұрын
there is a bit of Brian Jones on the original, and the original was always my favorite, as with the awesome promo film for the tune as well i'd say Brian had the look !
@philfrank92264 жыл бұрын
Yeah, u know the right history, cool.Keith also played open d capo`d at second fret.

To clarify: the gold guitar used to illustrate that the song is in open E tuning is a Deusenberg. The sunburst guitar used for the lesson is a Vox SSC55.

It looks like a Vox SSC33 to me. Maybe not, many look vox's alike. Nice tone for 60's rock.
@Vavoom0910 жыл бұрын
I like the open E tuning. For one guitar though, I just like your first phrase/riff. The opening B muting the open G. That intro sounds the best of what I've seen so far. But the rest would be to sparse for one guitar player. You must be giving examples for one and two guitars though.
@MichaelCaliri8 жыл бұрын
E - B - E -E - B -E can be played like this too The E instead of the G# give it that drone sound.

@senselessmonkee10 жыл бұрын
I think they used both, standard tuning and open E tuning together on separate guitars. Gave it a layered sound. Might be some piano on the riff as well. I read they spent a few days getting the riff how they wanted with the different instruments.

@Kelly14UK10 жыл бұрын
I have always thought they just took Satisfaction and came up with this.
@senselessmonkee10 жыл бұрын
Not really, they came up with the basic riff which is similar to satisfaction's and played around with variations of it . But the actual song is very different in melody and subject matter.

That's a Duesenberg Starplayer TV in the tuning portion, a Vox SSC-55 in the lesson parts of the videos, and (similar to the Stones) acoustic guitars with a bit of distortion were recorded for the full play-along performance in Part 2.
@markdirigible906210 жыл бұрын
Great playing, cool video, but the tone on that Duesenberg is nothin like Kieth's vintage Gibson
@sloanchampion855 жыл бұрын
I see a lot of back and forth on how Keef plays it...he's notorious for playing the same song different ways and hardly ever the same twice...I doubt if he remembers or really cares from one show to the next,listen to Shattered on the album and when he played it live it's totally different...he seems to be more like " just let me get through this song" rather than actually playing it any one way or another with any type of intention or trying to play it like he did on the album or the night before...The Stones have never been stickers for exactness they are famous for being very raw..but I definitely hear open E on the album.....
