I have seen this a few times & it always amazes me. These brothers were extremely talented. Apparently this dance was done in one take. It always gets me when they do the split jumps. You would think they would hurt themselves. Glad this film clip has been preserved for the younger generation to see.

@@richruksenas5992 I thought so as well. At one point the scuff marks they made disappeared. Not to take away from their amazing talents, and I'm sure they could do it in one take. It could have been to get a better camera angle or some other technical issue. Brilliant performance none the less.

@@dagmar.6954 Just stop it. Every time someone does a review of this at least person says it was completely unrehearsed and done in one take. What nonsense. They are fantastic dancers but there is no way it was unrehearsed. The camera operators, maybe lighting people, the other musicians; there is a lot of moving parts there, even if the Nicolas brothers didn't need to rehearse, which they would, everyone else would still need the whole thing run through. Film is expensive, they aren't going to waste the film, the director is not going to film until he's convinced it's ready to go. I saw an interview with one of the Nicolas brothers commenting on this exact "embellishment" that they didn't rehearse. He said the only part of the routine that they didn't rehearse was the split's going down the stairs, because everyone (including themselves) wanted them to avoid getting injured on those splits.
@paulpeterson4216
@paulpeterson4216 Жыл бұрын
@@dave2059 Exactly. This was for a movie. They were not filming these two guys playing around. Like Dave said, there are parts, specifically the splits jumping on the stairs, that they could not rehearse as they really only wanted to do it once.

I am a senior who loves classic movies. The first time I saw the Nicholas Brothers in a movie I was thrilled and mesmerized by their talent and their synchronicity. I became a fan immediately and looked for more movies or videos with them. They danced with Fred Astaire in a movie and other stars of that era. They deserved SO MUCH MORE recognition. And they were super talented, super sweet guys who just loved to dance. Find more Nicholas Brothers to show the world! Cab Calloway and his music were pretty damn epic too.

There were MANY architects of Rock and Roll. Mostly from the Blues side of things. And you, with your 10 month old KZbin account....usually accounts like yours are trolls or spammers from Russia or China.

@@guytansbariva2295 I absolutely agree about Blues musicians. They really planted the seeds for rock music. I didn’t say Cab was THE architect of rock and roll, I meant he was one of the architects. As far as trolling goes I don’t do that. It’s not in my nature. I don’t understand how my words or newer account somehow triggered you. I’m an American that loves this channel and loves all kinds of music. I don’t really go around having to justify myself but I hope I’ve allayed your fears that I’m an absolutist Russian troll.

For sure. It’s my opinion that Rock and Roll largely sprung out of the Jump Blues tradition, which formed as smaller jazz-blues groups due to WWII enlistment. There’s no doubt that swing- and especially folks like Cab- had a strong influence on Jump Blues and on later musical forms.

It's as remarkable that the Nicolas Brothers could actually do that, no CGI or camera tricks, as singers from the era could do what they did without autotune. There is nothing new under the sun, think about how much Mr. Calloway and the others who came before contributed to modern art, and how much today's artists will contribute to tomorrow's performers.

One of the greatest dance routines ever filmed. This thing blows me away, every time I've seen it. It's not just the coordination and timing. It's the incredible athleticism. Those splits are amazing. But one of the most awesome and subtle things happening is the sheer LEG STRENGTH required to slide your legs back together after a split THAT deep, and stand back up without using your hands. Incredible. And they did it REPEATEDLY in the last half of the routine. Just an astounding piece of work. So very glad posterity has been given this gift.

Oh, I'm so glad you're reacting to this! It's one of my favorite movie dance sequences. I've heard that Fred Astaire thought it was the finest dance sequence ever filmed. I love the use of shadows throughout the number. It reminds me of the final duel between Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone in 'The Adventures of Robin Hood'. Yes, that was scat-singing. I was listening to a radio series on the history of jazz some years ago, and they stated that it was invented by Louis Armstrong. Apparently, he and his band were in a recording studio, and he was recording vocals as well as playing the trumpet. For some reason, his sheet music fell of the stand, so instead of having to stop recording, he kept singing, using nonsense syllables to replace the lyrics. The expression on your face when the Nicholas Brothers start their jump-splits down the steps is priceless! If you look closely at the end of the live-action version of "Friend Like Me', you'll see Aladdin and the Genie echo that move.
