Yesterday, I was longing for that freedom. There's a swimming hole at the river we went to as kids. So, I rode down to see if the hole was still there, or developed. Yes! Evel Knievel jumped cars and busses, we jumped each other! A neighborhood with 11 boys all within 3 years age of each other. What could possibly go wrong? Cracked the frame on a Huffy. My Raleigh survived until I got a 10 speed in Jr. High to ride to school. If I timed it right, I could ride that all the way home with no hands. 2 1/2 miles, a couple intersections, and a pair of railroad tracks! That also means no touching the brakes on the handlebars. Helmets? What were those????

Schwinn's were top of the line, if you had a Schwinn, your parent's had money or were divorced. Most of us in my neighborhood had Dept. Store bikes, Sears, K-mart, etc.. only one kid I knew had a Schwinn and his parent's were divorced, he always had the best stuff. He had one of the first Schwinn BMX's they made, he also had every accessory, even mag wheels, I remember him going home and after lunch coming back with mag wheels, just to show off also had a number plate on his handle bars, not that he actually raced, but again just show off. I had a Sears BMX, which wasn't bad, it was built by Murray, I took off all the Sears stickers and put on Team Murray stickers.

Brandon Weinmann, I grew up in the 70’s jumping my bike, as well. Although it was fun (and, a bit scary) to me, my Granny STILL worried for my safety. She was concerned that I’d (to quote You).., “end up in the hospital or worse.” It’s called ‘Love’, Brandon. My Granny allowed me to be a kid but, she STILL feared I may injure myself (or, worse) doing something stupid. ‘Love’ vs. living ‘Life’ isn’t mutually exclusive.

Laffy, Not only did we jump ramps in the 70's, when it snowed, we'd wait by the traffic light on our corner of 63rd Street in Southwest Philly. When a car stopped for the red light, 5 or 6 of us would grab the back bumper and squat down still on our feet. We'd hang on when the car got going again. Most times the driver would be cool and pull us for a block to the next corner. If that light was green, we'd let go. Those were the days!

Brings back a lot of memories , thank you . I’m a little bit older but by the early 70s we were ditching the ape hangers and banana seats with sissy bars and replacing them with mx bars and seats off a 10 speed that we got from the swap meet because we realized there’s no way to bale when you’re jumping a 20’ wide rainwash cavern 8’ deep off a dirt ramp that we built with shovels . A lot of teeth / bones / feelings got hurt at that spot . And yes we built plywood ramps but they were 4’ tall , might be the record for how far a qa50 landed successfully. We weren’t evil , just having fun.

Back in 1974, my best plywood/cinder block jump was twelve neighbor kids laying side by side. Then we added number 13…….. it TRULY was an unlucky number………. Schwin stingray with some old Penton 125 handlebars welded into my gooseneck and a ten speed seat. We made our own BMX bikes back then…….fun days…

wow that's one sublime window into some golden days! The most uplifting video I've seen for so long ;) Back around the mid 70's in the UK my Dad would help us build bikes with suspension and 'cowhorn' bars for riding the trails in the woods and other versions with 'apehanger' bars and extended forks for cruising the streets. Wonderful times, thanks for helping the memories come flooding back!

Man thank you for this. You just put a big smile on my face. I'm 52 years young and remember like it was yesterday. A 1 foot high ramp then seemed to be 5 to 6 feet tall back then. Thanks again man for a memory. This is why I love KZbin. You can find anything. Your vid was shared to me from my childhood neighbor who we all jumped and rode bikes together. Thanks man. Captivating at the highest degree " just like my neighborhood, we had no Idea that the apple create, lemon peeler and orange and stingray manta Ray would be worth alot today. This video brought me some good tears because my grandfather had a Ford truck just like the one in this video and Dad was out of Vietnam. I'm a healthy 54 today and still ride . What the youth do on their bikes today is Absolutely mind blowing , if we would have seen that kind of stuff back in my day , we would have thought that they were from another star system . All we had was oval teen)...but redbull and monster energy ?....Best video ever !! Thank you so much !!!! MG: san diego california.

I use to have several bikes as a kid. Most were for jumping while I had a few just for going for rides. Ah, the good ol days. Now I have 2 bikes. One for navigating hills on my mountain bike & one just for cruising, which is my coaster brake one. That one is my baby, complete with some special modifications I made myself, including a cellphone holder, cup holder & so much more. Talk about a great ride!

The only reason I am no longer riding today is I have had 3 major back surgeries and am lucky to be able to walk.. Miss jumping bikes every. day.
