I think he intentionally pulled up short as to not land too high on the rock where the momentum would carry him further and into the water headfirst. This way he lands behind the rock,, head up, feet in front using the rock as a stop. That's alot of energy to slow down to be able to stop on a dime. I think he judged that perfectly
