Those shelter halves are pretty awesome, until there are mosquitos. Then they are hell on earth.

Congratulations on 20k! Dude, you brought back killer memories and I can almost smell the waxed canvas and diesel exhaust that ALL our gear had! We used the shelter halves in Basic (86) but never really used them after basic although we were issued them. I ran a radio relay rig and we rolled with a GP small, but every now and then a buddy and I would set up our shelter halves just to have something to do. Plus it looked cool under the camouflage netting covering our 5 ton communications rig. Thanks for sharing!

This video is truly Air Force appreciation. Watch you have to do all of that work to get your tent set up made me feel bad for all the times I complained when we didn’t have turn down service at our 5 star hotel

I've been digging trenches around my tents since I was in Boy scouts circa 1970. Don't get caught in sudden downpours.
@tadcobert13074 ай бұрын
As 11B/M & 19D, I only used these in Basic Training and Infantry School, never once with a real unit did we use these to make a tent. We used them with extra ponchos and tarps to make team hooches. We used commercial products to waterproof our shelters, and at times we dug trenches to redirect ground water from flowing under our shelters. We kept our weapons and LBE in the least wet parts of the shelters since we had the wet weather bag inside the ruck…used rucks as seats…

Oh man, just noticed how you are wearing your watch, we used to catch crap from our 1SG for wearing it like that…but it worked well on patrol😂

Aaah, yeah, memories... :-) I served in the German Bundeswehr where we had a very similar tent (the famous "Dackelgarage" - Dachshound garage). Only used it once after basic training. We had 6 shelter halves for 4 people, so we were able to build a pretty large structure by connecting 4 of it (on the diagonal sides) to make a square of 4 walls and finally the remaining two shelter halves connected as a pup tent on top of it as a roof. Plenty of space for our equipment in the middle! :-)

My loadout in 1993-1999 was LBV(6 mags + 1 in A2) (2) 1qt canteens with canteen cup. Butt pack with NODS, extra poncho, extra pair of socks, some land nav stuff etc in a ziplock bag. Shoulder straps of the LBV I carried ranger beads and a compass and a pressure dressing kit. I carried the large Alice ruck with frame with a 2qt canteen with cover and the drinking hose valve routed up and over to my shoulder straps. Inside the ruck with wet weather bag was extra pairs of BDUS, socks etc in a ziplock bag, poncho liner, propane bottle with screw on stove, MRE's, cans of chew, wool sweater, mosquito net, pogue bait, extra ammo, hygiene kit etc. On the ruck top velcro flap was maps, protractors etc. E-tool on the side of the ruck. In the (3) big pouches on the front side of ruck was a poncho, lots of 550 cord, some stakes and most likely an MRE. Depending what season we were in, I would strap a sleeping bag on top of the ruck. I dont remember carrying or using the foam pad. I just plopped my ass on the ground. I had cut the foam pad and placed in the frame of the ruck which made it more comfortable on my back. Thats about all I can remember.

nice job on 20k! I just died some more "ACU" btw!... love seeing these vintage gear vids! reminds me of how I hated sleeping in those. My first exposure to one was at Camp San Onofre' at Pendleton in '88. We were doing field training and they had us make each one side into a cowboy bedroll. All I could think about was waking up with a rattle snake! ugh!

Congrats on the 20K subscriptions!!! I had a shelter half kit in the trunk of my car for years to include the down filled mummy sleeping bag. I slept a number of times out in the desert w/the shelter half tied off between my car and the tent pole. Either on the ground or on a cot. In the late 90s did a lot of camping down in Southern Utah near Moab, Arches NP, and Colorado River area. I was going to college on the GI Bill.

Congrats on 20K!! So to the best of my recollection... Medium Alice (no frame), H-Harness (or LBV depending on the year), Web belt, Two mag pouches with 6 mags, two 1Q canteens with covers, canteen cup and stove, E-tool, Poncho and liner, shelter half, 4 stakes, rope, 3 poles, butt pack, FAK (the old green boxy one), 2 - 2q canteens with covers, mummy bag or MSS depending on year, rubber b1tch or foam sleeping pad depending on the year, flak vest, helmet, weapon, gas mask. EDIT: I forgot, bayonet and K-Bar USMC Fighting Knife.

Congrats on making 20K ! Back in the 1990s, those of us who were part of Coast Guard Ashore Forces (yes, we were & are a thing... Port/Maritime Security) participated in a variety of one - two week long FTX's and used issue (and personal purchase) ponchos, mosquito netting & PVC piping for our bivouacs... we had woodland BDU's too. We had a fair degree of freedom regarding configuration... plow point, "A" frame, ... three snapped together make for a nice little semi-wall tent w/a floor. The only old-school canvas pup tents were issued to & "used" by the USPHS & NOAA types (uniformed civilians) who were never taught to use a tent... or anything else, and we ended up having to show them. No Diamond or Cathoma tents back then. We did, however, have the Cascade Thermarest "self-inflating" 20"x72"x1.5" sleep mats. I have two now and love them. I recently acquired a Dragoon Ridgeback one-man bivy tent and just waiting for Fall to arrive so I can test it out.

Aside from all the good stuff you showed, I see a need for stealth practice. I heard you coming a mile away. When I owned a significant area of land in Oregon, every year I'd have poachers. I'd sneak up on them just enough to scare the feces out of them, before walking them into town to be cited by the state troopers. Stealth is an art and a science. Practiced by sneaking up on black bears. If you can scare them, they'll turn and run, because you caught them with their pants down. They were prey not the predator

We got a tarp called a Hootchie, thats it. A bit of cord nylon same thickness as twine, buddy system snap 2 together ridgeline between 2 trees find some sticks for pegs pray the ground isnt rock hard lol. Not had my hands on one or 2 of these. But, as a Civvie, Id try making a simple modification/ accessory. A strip of Nylone webbing strap. Attach taps at appropriately distanced spaces for a snap, sew a decent YKK zipper, hey presto - Zipper closing opening. Man id hate to be fight to open snaps, when a mans gotta go hes gotta go go go 😂😂 Wondering if tou could make a nylon or nylon or mesh gusset for summer, all the way around via some snaps, extra custo length pole end, get some more hight doesnt matter if you touch the tarp, youd have a foot extra height so you cant end up with you sleeping bag touch it 🤔. There we go someone will try that mod 😮😂😂😂

Great video, Brother !!! Congratulations on 20K !!! Great memories !!! (They built a lot of character) Question, if you can answer it, please....what are the length of the tent poles, individually (point to base), in inches ??? I am looking to replace my hiking poles used in the backyard poncho tent that we use for my kiddo, with thinner gauge pvc pipes and the ends (maybe with a short screw threaded from the inside), to make it a bit safer for my son and the 6 dogs we have (Husky-German Shepherd mixes, which are very active, but want some shelter from the sun (or rain). I am looking to get the threaded ends, that I can screw together several shorter sections into a longer section for the "pup tents", as well as connect a few more sections for tarps (while hammocking, or for things like family picnics and such. Thank you in advance, for your, anyone's reply. Keep up the great work !!! P.S. I had the same issue with all of my BDU pants. I even sat open-legged for a BN CDR's AAR, where he commented on my "tighty-whiteys", and stated the he was glad to see that some of his men had the "testicular fortitude" (cajones) to do what needed to be done to get the mission completed, no matter how embarasing it might be...🤣🤣🤣

We used PVC piping and hose clamps as tent polls w/our ponchos. One Chief Petty Officer had a few shotgun cleaning rods that he screwed/hose clamped together for his tent poles.

I dont know if its been standarized but from what I saw in late 80's / mid 90's was same shit except you would attach a GP strap to your 2Qt canteen (which by the way was attached lower on the side) pull the GP strap under the frame then over the opposite side of pack with E-Tool and over the E-tool (also mounted on lower strap) then over the pockets (through the snap loops) and then attached to the 2Qt canteen if that makes sense. If pulled tight, keep things in place and E-tool does not rattle , e-tool often secured with rubber band so it does not make noise. If no fram then on the back wall of pack inside a half of BW Isomat folded (enough to rest bones) and in the folded isomat a large clipboard so its easier to write and show things (battle plan XD ). This keeps the back pack stiffer when you open it (know what i mean) and if you have some uncomfy items in the pack they wont dig in your kidneys.
