Jumping Position with a Purpose - Schuyler Riley

International show jumper Schuyler Riley insists on having a ‘position with a purpose’. In this brilliant video, she shares her top tips to help riders to be in a correct position that enables balance and provides clear signals to the horse. Firstly, Schuyler shows you the position in the half seat and explains that there should be a straight line from the ankle; through the hip bone; to the back of the shoulder blade. This line should be perpendicular to the ground, which means the rider stays over the center of the horse which improves the balance. Schuyler demonstrates how you can test the lower leg position by opening and closing the hip angle within the half seat position. As well as the position in the saddle, Schuyler also rides a useful exercise in the canter and shows how the elbows should move back and forward with the movement of the horse to keep in balance. A correct position is essential for giving the horse clear signals, and ensuring the horse and rider stay in a good balance together.
