That's a good way of doing it. Make sure to take snapshots when you have the VM built so that you can easily revert back.

When you talk about data analytics do you mean being able to retrieve and analyse info example from a siem or do you mean going down in things like sql, tableau power bi ?

Tableau, PowerBio, and so are the ones I am referring to. Look for the ones that are commonly used and start learning those.

Take a look at a few different job descriptions and keep track of what a) technology solutions the companies use and b) what skill sets are required by the candidate. Look for the ones that are repeatedly mentioned by different companies and those are the ones to focus on.
