Feminism in Pakistan is represented by women from various walks of life and some of the more vocal women amongst them might come from elitist backgrounds or might be confused about what feminism is about. However, that should not prevent us from understanding that feminism is literally a movement to safeguard the rights of women as human beings, especially in the context of our society, as extremely vulnerable and under-privileged human beings. It takes a fat molvi burping at the pulpit to proudly declare that the rights of women are in any way safe in Pakistan. It is for us all to stand up for and fight for this Shareefa and for every Shareefa in our society. Sadly, today we are a society which persecuted her for making an honest living, which calls her husband ‘beghairat’ for allowing her to be by his side as they strive for a respectable life. Ironically, we are a society where she has to say that SHE will fight on, because she knows that the fight for her rights is imperative and that the society won’t fight it for her. In that way, those much maligned ladies carrying some provocative placards are doing more for her than us keyboard supporters. They are getting out there and reminding the misogynistic society that women must have their right to take their decisions for themselves. It’s an extremely important reminder and if it takes a few offending placards to get that message across, then so be it. The placards are the least of our concerns when our society is such an obnoxious entity in itself.
