Educational objectives:
1. Describe ways that climate change can affect medical practices, including rheumatology.
2. Review evidence that air pollution has systemic effects, with a focus on rheumatologic disease.
3. Explain the role of physicians in practicing sustainable healthcare, with examples from
rheumatology.
Biosketch of Dr. Sasha Bernatsky, James McGill Professor of Medicine, Associate of the Dept. of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health (EBOH):
Sasha Bernatsky is a Rheumatologist, Epidemiologist, and a James McGill Professor of Medicine at McGill University in the Divisions of Rheumatology and Clinical Epidemiology. She is a member of the Centre for Health Outcomes Research (CORE) at the Research Institute of the
McGill University Health Centre and a senior scientist affiliated with the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program. Dr. Bernatsky co-leads the Canadian Network for Advanced Interdisciplinary Methods for comparative effectiveness research (CAN-AIM) and the Canadian
Rheumatology Administrative Data Network (CANRAD). Funding by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the US Department of Defense, she has pioneered research on the effects of air pollution in rheumatic disease. Along with her division chief, Beth Hazel, Dr. Bernatsky is a
member of the newly formed Canadian Rheumatology Association planetary health taskforce.
Biosketch of Dr. Stephanie Tom, Rheumatology Division Head at Trillium Health Partners (Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital, Queensway Health Centre):
Dr Stephanie Tom has been on the Canadian Rheumatology Association (CRA) Board of Directors since 2018 and lecturer at the University of Toronto. She is the chair of the CRA taskforce on planetary health.
