Bosco's Garden

2 жыл бұрын

We have been busy as ever this past while sowing, harvesting and selling the produce from our no dig market garden. The food forest is now in its second year and it is really starting to go into jungle mode as we move into the beginning of summer. The herb garden and pond we made in 2020 is just something spectacular and the new wildflower patch we converted from a boring old lawn at the front of the house is now a mass of pre-existing wildflowers that have finally got their chance to bloom and bring even more life into the garden!

It's amazing what you have achieved in such a fairly short time! It really shows what hard work and determination can do. I wish more young people shared your interest in becoming self sufficient and have food security through gardening.

Hi Penny, I'm getting the butter and salt out already for the new potatoes! Those nasturtiums seeded all by themselves from last year and they have been growing steadily since very early in the year in this warm microclimate. They smell incredible too!

Absolutely stunning ! love what you have achieved and love seeing your progress. We have taken on an old farm house on two acres in county Tipperary.The land has been used for cattle and producing hay so its been compacted a fair bit. Have you any advice as to where i would get alot of cardboard from ? or would it be better to cover with a membrane? we defiantly want to go down the no-dig route. Many thanks for the videos. All the best, Jon.
@BoscosGarden
@BoscosGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, that sounds really exciting! I wouldn't worry too much about the compaction unless it smells anaerobic (like bad breath) when you dig a hole. If that's the case it may benefit from being forked to make some gaps but without turning over the soil. That will let some air in and let the life in the soil get to work for you. I beg, borrow and steal all my cardboard. Try bike shops, large appliance shops and anywhere else you think might have large boxes. In my experience, they are always delighted to help out once you are friendly and polite. Don't go to a supermarket because most of their boxes are tiny and you will be there until Christmas trying to pull the sellotape off of them! I couldn't recommend this method of no dig enough since I started properly last year. Not only have the harvests and time saved from weeding been incredible but simply learning about the soil life and watching the ground mature has been so much fun. I'm actually looking forward to putting more manure down in the autumn and watching this beast under our feet start to feed itself. 🤣 Best of luck with your new venture across the border! Feel free to drop into us any Friday if you want to have a chat. Shane

Hi, great Video. I’ve recently moved to Kilmovee county Mayo and started creating a veg etc gardening using a variety of methods but my favourite being no dig. Just had poly tunnel put up and struggled to find good source of compost. Managed to get mushroom compost. Can you give me any helpful tips. Heather
@BoscosGarden
@BoscosGarden Жыл бұрын
Hey Heather, I used some mushroom compost this year as well. It took a bit longer to break down and plants struggled a bit at first but all came well after about 2 months. If you make your beds between now and October, the frost will break it down nicely over winter. You can still plant into it for winter veg in the tunnel. Most things will be fine but salad leaves struggled badly for me when it was fresh. Shane

Thank you, that’s helps a lot. I did have to dig my outside beds as on overgrazed land with loads of stones and silage plastic and bale twine in and have so much to do. Look forward to seeing more of your videos so than you for sharing.

Is it just the red bolting? In your chard? Some brightlights blends are worse than others, and have high occurrence of annual RED chard.
@BoscosGarden
@BoscosGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Heya Ian, thanks for the feedback. The yellow is definitely bolting as well but the white/green seems to be okay. JM Fortier grows his separately, so I may try that and look into other bolt hardy varieties like you said. I have a restaurant now looking for it so it's a major bummer...

@@BoscosGarden Huh, well we grow ours mixed, but when I mess with anything but Johnny's, I see a higher occurance of that. I have never had Johnny's bright lights bolt. I hate to always go back to johnny's, but they do a great job with quality control stuff like this. I hate seeing you deal with that! Sorry for the bad luck. Everything looks great!!
