@glisses7 Junghans membrane gongs were used in the 50's Then they started with battery-driven movements. But before 1950 they had no membrane

@glisses7 Yeah, those rope-clocks...they were in every apartment in the GDR. I have some of them, some with and some without a chime. I don't really care how the clock looks as long as the movement is interesting.

A normal clock key. That kind of movement used a balance wheel.

Also alarm clocks and other small clocks will have a key built into the back

I don’t get it...does it have a speaker or actual chime rods but very small?

This is a special chime set-up by Junghans. It uses 3 chime rods in a "bim-bam" configuration with a speaker cone and a spring. The block that holds the 3 chime rods is mounted on a spring so that it's free to vibrate, and there is a metal spike that sticks out from the speaker cone inside the case which picks up vibrations from the gong block and amplifies it through the speaker grill at the back. It's quite a neat little invention from Junghans. I prefer their "wag-on-the-wall" clocks with 2 big weights and an exposed pendulum.

@@DannysClocks I see. Thanks! No wonder they call these “loudspeaker” chimes

@glisses7 They are used to run about a week with one wind-up, yeah. Most of those rope-clocks are like that. Except the old wall clocks, they are used to run about 2-4 weeks.
