This is an English multitrack fandub of the song "That's What Friends Are For" (The Vulture Song) from the classic Disney movie "The Jungle Book" (1967). It is an inter-regional collaboration by
Julien Neel:
/ trudbol
and Patrick von Massow:
/ partyburner
Please use
• Jungle Book - That's W...
to watch in 720p HD quality, which is highly recommended for this video.
The song was written by Disney staff songwriters Robert and Richard Sherman (the Sherman Brothers). The vultures' appearance is based on the Beatles and the song was originally planned to be a rock song, being sung by the Beatles, themselves. That idea was dropped, though and the song rewritten to this Barbershop style version. In the film it is performed by Lord Tim Hudson as vulture Dizzy (resembling George Harrison), James Patrick O'Malley as vulture Buziie (Ringo Starr), Chad Stuart as vulture Flaps (Paul McCartney), Digby Wolfe as vulture Ziggy (John Lennon) and Bruce Reitherman as the boy Mowgli. The talking voice of the tiger Shere Khan has been provided by George Sanders. There are contradicting information regarding the singing voice of Shere Khan, though. In some sources, it says the singing was done by Bill Lee. Others claim it was Thurl Ravenscroft.
Special thanks go to Marie Guégan, Henrik Heimbürger and Sebastian Limbach for giving us helpful feedback!
Furthermore, we want to thank Seth Weinstein
www.sethweinste...
for transcribing the song.
Please also take a look at the videos Julien posted on his KZbin channel, as well as my other videos.
The lyrics (also included in the video) are:
"We're your friends.
We're your friends.
We're your friends to the bitter end,
The bitter end.
When you're alone,
When you're alone
Who comes around,
Who comes around
To pluck you up,
To pluck you up
When you are down,
When you are down?
And when you're outside lookin' in,
Who's there to open the door?
That's what friends are for.
Who's always eager to extend
A friendly claw?
That's what friends are for.
And when you're lost
In dire need,
Who's at your side
At lightning speed?
We're friends with every creature coming down the pike
In fact we've never met an animal we didn't like,
Didn't like.
So you can see
We're friends,
We're friends in need.
And friends in need
Are friends indeed.
We'll keep you safe in the jungle
Forevermore.
That's what friends are for."

Thanks, I'm glad you like our version! For that last note I used a trick: I sung the bass solo in the morning, right after getting up, since at that time of the day, one usually has a better low range. Try it, it's fun :).

This song is probably my favorite Disney song of the 1960s- It was a tribute to The Beatles AND barbershop music, and the Sherman Brothers did an excellent job writing this piece, and you guys did a great job covering this! Keep it up!

Yeah, Carly, it's why I recommend you see The Princess and the Frog. While it's a NEW Disney movie, they returned again to the drawn animation, not just the computer animation and it's truly a good look at another culture and time for Disney. Very awesome.

Shere Kann was sung by Bill Lee. Ravenscroft might also have been involved: the two were the founding and continual members of the Mellomen from their inception in 1948 until the group disbanded sometime in the early 1970's; they were staples in the Disney studios. When you think of Thurl Ravenscroft, think of "Tony the Tiger" of the Frosted Flakes commercials.

Yes! I watched it so long ago, I was too little to really get much of it. But now watching it, just like a lot of Disney movies, I catch so much more. Not to mention how they portrayed the fight scene with Baloo and the tiger. It was a kind of censorship that was actually appropriate and at the time the movie came out, I'm sure it was quite a breakthrough. ^^ I'm a film student, so a lot of the history to the film thrills me too. That they had a Barbershop Quartet song was an extreme bonus. XD

The reason barbershop is about locking chords is because of the overtone series. If correctly "locked", harmonics will get activated that are higher than the notes actually song, so it sounds like there is more voices, hence the overtone. Barbershop arrangements have very limited chords. Mostly major/minor or dominant. Notice how 99% of barbershop tunes end on a major chord with a doubled root? It's because those notes activate the most overtones in the harmonic series!

Compared to the original songs that lots of these tunes are based off, the chords have been altered to fit the barbershop style. Since augmented maj 7 chord. ( 1, 3 , #5, ma7) doesn't activate the harmonics like a maj 7 chord would, arrangers intentionally simplify chords so they ring more and thus the barbershop style of arranging emerges. If ringing isn't the two of your primary concerns, you should consider branching into vocal jazz types of music! Your pitch is excellent-Try it out!
