I want all the wild jungle fowls to be a protected bird because they’re beautiful birds
@luciantheprotean3 жыл бұрын
They are protected birds, but I believe that breeding in captivity can also help in perpetuating junglefowls and maintaining their genetic integrity. True wild junglefowls can sometimes get into contact with humans, and interbreed with domesticated chickens. This creates wild mongrels instead of true junglefowls. If this continues, true junglefowls would cease to exist. The only way to truly prevent them from breeding with domestic and free-ranged chickens is to ensure that they won't have any contact with human civilisation. With human populations continually growing (you have to understand that these birds are native to countries that have large populations and are mostly poor) and requiring more space to survive, encroaching the junglefowl's habitat is something that can no longer be prevented or controlled. It's only my opinion - but besides making efforts to safeguard their habitat, captive breeding is still a must.

Many in our land, Malaysia, long time ago. We call it "ayam hutan". They live in forest and can fly as bird. We catch them using trap called "racik" or shoot them using weapons. "Ayam Hutan / Junglefowls" still exist now as a protected animals. Our neighbour Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines still have these Ayam Hutan.

Thanks for your insight! I'm aware of the existence of different junglefowls all over South East Asia, but I never really learnt about how other people call them in their respective countries. These are beautiful. We have roosters in the village here (an African country I live in) which look exactly like the red jungle fowl just bigger and can't fly for long. The hens are able to climb into trees like normal birds and perch there for the night. They also fly out of the coop/run or over fences within the coop/run. Chickens here in the village are left to live freely and only ever get slaughtered occasionally. They roam the village or farms (crop farms and livestock farms) and go back home when they will. No one bothers them. They are fat and the roosters usually have a glow or shiny feathers. They also have firmer meat and a stronger flavor than your typical Cornish X we buy in town about 60km away.

Chickens and junglefowl are not the same, yes chickens came from junglefowl but they are completely different, different diet, different needs
@indyreno2933 Жыл бұрын
@Zachary Bergman, actually, chickens and junglefowl are the same thing, people more often call junglefowl wild chickens or simply chickens, there are four extant species being the Fork-Tailed Chicken or Green Junglefowl (Gallus varius), the Bankiva Chicken or Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus (cladistically including the Domestic Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus))), the Sonnerat's Chicken or Grey Junglefowl (Gallus sonneratii), and the Lafayette's Chicken or Ceylon Junglefowl (Gallus lafayettii), despite chickens also being known as junglefowl, not all species are found exclusively in tropical climate as the bankiva chicken or red junglefowl is also present in cold-climate habitats like in the Himalayas, making it the only of the four living chicken species to live in colder habitats.

I plan on having a bunch of hen breeds, dual purpose breeds for meat and eggs, and I plan to have 2 roosters. Rooster one is a jungle fowl(gallus gallus) and a dual purpose breed with good temperament. I plan for the wild fowl to breed my first generation of breeding hybrid hens. Then I’ll breed the hybrid offspring back to a dual purpose breed to bring back egg laying capabilities and size as well as temperament. My goal is to bring back genetic diversity, better fertility, more fitter chickens that are better at surviving predators, and healthier birds overall. I’ll swap the jungle fowl out with another unrelated bird and the dual purpose rooster gets replaced by a different breed that is also dual purpose.
@andreamoscoso40652 жыл бұрын
I was kinda thinking about the same or similar. I was also thinking about Bielefelders that can forage a bit more and like being in the woods but they take at least 9 months to start laying eggs so I'd have other dual purpose breeds to produce eggs even thrift the winter. I'm really looking into breeds that can forage more and get majority of their food through agricultural and insect farming like black soldier fly small scale farming and the rest would be wonderful if they can forage for their own food even if that reduces the amount of eggs they lay a bit. I'd also like them to be able to go to and survive in about the opening area of a wooded area not too far from their pens and I'd like them to be able to defend themselves against predators but i don't want them to attack me nor my family ever one wrong move and people can be a goner by their spurs. I wish you all the best of luck on your venture!
@kenjiro26762 жыл бұрын
@@andreamoscoso4065 honestly, breeding for temperament might be tricky. I’d have to cull a lot of roosters to pick one that isn’t human aggressive. It’s going to be an interesting project when I eventually start sometime in the future. Thanks for commenting, and I’ll definitely need the luck!
@luciantheprotean2 жыл бұрын
Hello there! Sorry about the late reply. That Inosuke-derived name (if I'm not mistaken) made me chuckle. Anyway... If you have junglefowls and want to cross them to another breed for the purpose of producing hardy layers, make sure to choose a breed that is know for high productivity when it comes to laying. Junglefowls mostly only lay eggs during the regular breeding season they are accustomed to in the wild. They will not lay eggs every day like the usual domestic breeds. You also have to selectively breed for friendliness, and make sure to bond with them from a young age. Junglefowls are extremely nervous and skittish-just showing up in their pens to collect eggs freak them out immensely. I've had my fair share of cuts and bruises as proof.
