Tetsuji Hayashi, who composed Junko Ohashi's "Rainy Saturday & Coffee Break (1977)", was a Japanese composer, arranger, and singer-songwriter. He made his debut as a singer-songwriter in April 1973, He composed and arranged an astonishing number of hit songs in Japan in the 80's and 90's. He was one of the most famous hit makers of J pop songs in the 80's. Perhaps it would be easier to understand him as the Japanese version of David Foster. His following songs are representative works, all of which were big hits that were well-known to all Japanese at that time. (Tetsuji Hayashi's compositions.) “Midnight Door - Stay With Me" for Miki Matsubara Mariya Takeuchi "SEPTEMBER” Masaki Ueda "Sea looks like sad colors (Kanashii Iro yane.", Anri "I Can't Stop the Loneliness ", "YOU ARE NOT ALONE" For Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe “SUMMER SUSPICION”, “Your Heart is Marine Blue”, “RIVERSIDE HOTEL” “A Summer Tale of Two of Us-Never Ending Summer”-, “Full of Silence” "North Wing" for Akina Nakamori "Love Story (Aijo Monogatari)”,"The Closest Island to Heaven" for Tomoyo Harada Momoko Kikuchi "Graduation”and others To Junichi Inagaki "A Dozen Excuses," "MARIA," "Can't Talk About It” For Junko Ohashi."Rainy Saturday & Coffee Break","White Requiem”,"Last Number""Embraced by Fog" For Hatsumi Shibata ”My Luxury Night (arr.)”

Absolutely beautiful! Her voice is so gorgeous, expressive, and captivating! I doesn't matter that I can't understand japanese, everything about this just draws me into the music and I just feel myself melt into the sounds and become one with the music. The song's construction is so wonderful and beautifully layered, the multitude of instruments with such different timbres and tonal colors, being used in such precise and specific yet fluid and effortless ways, creates such a hypnotizing and interesting blend, especially with the trading off of melodies, and styles; each popping in and out to make a statement as well as blend together to contribute to the same sonic painting full of nuance, calm, beauty, listless, and well placed dissonance and droned notes that add to this optimistically bittersweet affair of emotion that is somehow super deep and reflective, yet chill. I also love that vocal effect a little over halfway into the song that sounds similar to the effect used in Tokai by Taeko Onuki, which adds a major sounding dissonance at points, which is so captivating, especially as the structure of the song changes. Also the blending of electronic instruments and acoustic ones is so skillful and especially with how they usually contrast each other and trade of throughout the song. City pop is such a wonderful genre of music that more americans should listen to, it's so complex and nuanced, but simply enjoyable to listen to, even if you just want a chill track that you want to listen to without thinking too much. Also you can hear the american influence and beautifully it blends with the japanese sound.

Doc No. Sentimental Lady was taken down years ago as well as the original recording of Loving Spoonful. Her very first single is not there anymore and those are all 70's tunes.

I couldn't find any of the ones you mentioned, I only found a japanese site that shows the Rainbow CD having 4 extra tracks, one of which is Loving Spoonful (www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UPCY-6529) Unless you can tell me the album I can't help you with them

Thanks, Doc. It was because of UTB Hollywood channel 18.2 now reduced to a two hour infomercial on 18.1 Sundays that got me hooked on her from the start. Did you listen to Junko sensei your whole life?

Sounds so beautiful, brings me back memories from 3 years ago when I discovered this song here. By the way, 3 years ago, when I discovered this song I've thought "This sounds like an anime ending song" and yes, until this day I keep thinking that, it really sounds like an anime ending song.

We need to consider the past situation of Japanese music. For the past 60 years, the Western music industry has ignored Japanese musicians as if they did not exist. For a long time, we have been deprived of the existence of Japanese popular music and its many talents in various genres because the Western music industry has not signed many Japanese musicians to sales contracts in the Western music market and has not supplied the world market with their music. It was only with the advent of the Internet , KZbin that the invisible racially prejudiced walls of the Western music industry were broken down and the music of the past began to circulate around the world. After that, it was only then that much of the world became aware of the existence of many Japanese past popular music. The Japanese popular music scene in various genres were as active in Japan as in the Western, with a history of over 60 years, almost the same length as that of the Western, but Japanese musicians, no matter how talented they were, were only given the opportunity to sign release contracts limited to domestic only in Japan. So people of all over the world could not even know about the existence of the Japanese Rock, Jazz and popular music and many musicians for a long time because they were buried only in Japanese market.

Most of city-pops weren't issued in the west at that age. Only when an album is unburied and become popular enough will it be re-issued in the west.
