I have compared the actual story in writing to this radio broadcast. They are pretty different to me, I get that the story to be adapted to the shorter radio format, but the ending seems quite different in this radio version.

@@Eidolon1andOnly 'were' is for impossibilities. 'If only I were a bird.' 'was' is for possibilities. 'If only I was drunker.' 'were' is better in that sentence.

Regrettably, I have to agree. Overloaded my suspension of disbelief rather badly, even allowing for the time period it was written in. A shame, I generally enjoy Simak's work. Also that ending..."something a million light-years old..." Seriously? Simak's gone all Lucas on us there.
