Howdy gents, this is the last of the Australian accent on camera, we were doing way too much of it for awhile and couldn’t help ourselves, so sorry for that. This was about a month ago. Currently the maverick is fixed up and I’m daily driving it - more info on the tubes with that soon

Back in the 70s when I worked for Ford they found out that a lot of those Dura Spark boxes would work fine thru about 99% of their temp range, but fail at 1%. The trouble was they didn't fail at the upper or lower portion, but someone in the middle. A couple of degrees higher or lower would work fine. Ford only tested them at a few temps so most of them weren't caught. You could pour cold water over them when they konked out and they would run again. I drove home in the middle of the night one time by packing snow around the box in my Granada. It would run for about 20 minutes until the snow melted, then I would pull over and pack more snow around it and drive another 15-20 minutes then rinse and repeat. Ford finally figured out what temp range they would fail at and test several points in that range to weed more of them out and made a change in the box as well.

Interesting - I never had a Dura Spark box fail on me, and even swapped the system from an 81 Tbird into my friends 67 Mustang 289, just so I didn't have to keep setting his points for him (don't worry, he kept the original distributor so it could go back in). One of those cars was a 1977 Monarch (mercury version of the Granada).

I was 14 yrs old when I started doing the vehicle maintainance on a fleet of 17 ford trucks in 1978. We would replace a couple trucks every year. We had trucks with just a few thousand miles on them broke down because of the ignition box. Had to keep one on the shelf at all times. Aftermarket boxes were better than rebuilt ford units... I wonder whatever happened to all the Mavericks and Comets that were bought cheap in the late70's early 80's and converted to drag cars? Used to see them all over the place at all the local strips. My older brother's first car was a '69 1/2 Maverick in Burnt Orange, absolutely for crap 144ci sixbanger with three on the tree. After he beat it almost to death, it was my turn. Drove it until '80 until she was really tired all the way around. Then I gutted it, tubbed it, put in a roll bar, dropped a Clevor 351W with 351C heads with a low-rise Edelbrock and a Holley on it with a Ford Toploader behind. Replaced everything that bolted to the bottom of the car, brakes, rear end, springs... That car would try to twist itself into a pretzel when I launched it, not exactly the most robust platform to push horsepower through no matter how much bracing was welded to the frame. I recently learned the guy I sold it to back in '99 later gave it to his grandson and he helped him restore and upgrade it whe Isaw them with the car at the local Saturday car show last month, first time I've seen the car since I sold it.
@williamstamper4424 жыл бұрын
Its a great question and from what i gather even the race cars either rusted or were wrecked. I dont think there was as many as we were led to believe existed. Maybe just maybe there are 1200 more hidden in barns and garages all over the US. I asked this same question of NHRA super stock 1981-1987 G body cutlasses that were back halfed back then...where the hell are they now? Im starting to realize the ones we seen were in the hundreds not thousands

@@ksavage681 Too bad Ford decided put a two barrell carb and a single exhaust on those 302's instead of a four barrell, a dual exhaust and a four speed behind it, but that was during the high oil price era and "performance" cars were a sad joke. You could have put milled 351 heads right on top of that 302 block and had a screamer.

Gidday from Brisbane Australia. You two are bloody legends. At the front of the car are the mudguards and bonnet and screen and at the back, you have the boot. Under the bonnet is the carbi, and that is attached to the donk. Back near the boot and the diff is where petrol goes. The tyres need to be filled to 2.4 Kp and go down to the main roads and put rego on it. I am looking forward to next week when these two blokes work on an HR Holden ute and a Leyland P76 and maybe that nice shiela, Moog will show up. She is a nice bird. Good to see the spanners are out, they must be fair dinkum about kicking over the donk. Bye from OZ.

Electric fans are amazing.... if you have the right one. I've got a few mid 90's Cougar/Thunderbird fans, and a few 97-98 Mark VIII fans, all set up. Anyway, with the alternator upgraded, I can drive my '74 Camaro in 100 degree heat, and it'll stay running at 170, even in CA traffic. From what I've heard, a lot of aftermarket fans are terrible. Reconfiguring a OEM fan, with the right pulse width modulator controller (Auto Cool) it works wonders.
