When I was a young lad (18 years old) I worked at a Cottman Transmission in Ft. Myers, Florida. I had pulling transmissions down to a science. My average time to pull a transmission was about 15 minutes. If you do it enough you get that good. Then again, I didn't work on that many rusted out cars and trucks in Florida. a 1/2 inch drive 36 inch long extension is your best friend when removing the bell housing bolts. Sometimes, if you have an engine that turns over hard when it is hot your timing my be off by a little bit. Try adding or removing a degree to see if that cures your problems but you may already know that...

“You’ve got a 9/16” on one side and 11/16” on the other. Does that make any sense?” Actually, yes. Ford did that a LOT back when they made things to be repairable. It was so you could work on the truck if you only had a single set of end wrenches.
@adaml1355 Жыл бұрын
Put your transmission jack on top of a tool cabinet and ratchet strap it down. Thus making it tall enough to use with lift up and stable . Or build a rolling table to set the trans jack on. Standing while removing transmission is much easier than lay on back. Love the content
@mph5896 Жыл бұрын
Or just buy the correct trans jack. I have done enough transmissions on my back, and never again.

Booger is back on the road! This video is motivating, I'm working on a 1988 F250 7.3 IDI and I had to pull the transmission to get a new torque convertor. She's not yet quite ready for prime time, but watching Kevin and Mook's excitement driving Booger, I can't wait for the same experience. Its been a long project of installing the torque convertor, finding a replacement motor, pulling the motor and swapping in a good used one. It took me a year to get to this point with working outside in my driveway in good weather plus with limited days as the past two years I've been working 65 to 72 hours a week due to manpower shortages. Thanks Mook and Kevin! I needed this!!!!

Yay, glad to see you posting again. I just got my 400 dollar ranger running because the truck engine was bad but the transmission I found out didn’t want to last long. I blew reverse out of it yesterday after the first drive. So I’m going back with a manual because I hate how I keep losing automatic transmissions. My daily failed so I rebuilt it fast and it didn’t last long. The guy blew the engine so it makes sense that he hurt the trans in the process

The door rattle is likely due to a missing plastic piece on the striker plate, a pice of pex water pipe works real nice as a replacement
@mrmoofle11 ай бұрын
Or you can just buy the door bushings for like 50 cents each. I have a 93 F-150, and the doors rattled like hell. Door bushings fixed them just fine.

Doesn't take too long to learn to appreciate power steering on a heavy vehicle Only thing I'd have done differently, is consider a rear main oil seal for the engine while you're in there. Even if it isn't leaking now, it may. Also, the reverse lights are on the column, it's part of the park/neutral switch, maybe needs adjusted.

Very cool!!! Great to see another 78 back on the road!! My first truck was a 79 that I bought in 1992. The M engines (351/400) eat starters. Parts store reman units are garbage. After having to rebuild a out-of-the-box reman, I gave up and rebuilt it myself; lasted much longer!! Make sure you have a clean mounting surface as the case grounds to the bellhousing and that can cause a slow spin. For the rear end: best leveling trick I found is about 300 lbs of traction sand bags behind the axle in the bed. Levels it out and it rides better. Beautiful truck!!! One of THE BEST Ford made!♥️💪
@bachtomin213 Жыл бұрын
Just leave it sit for a few more years Mook!. Then Kevin and you can do a "will it run!" 😄👍

18:16 the 9/16" on one side and 11/16" on the other side is so those working on their truck only had to use one set of wrenches. If you had only one 9/16" wrench and needed two, you would be stuck. had a similar issue on the rear gas tank of my 83 F-150. The bolt wrench was an odd size. I replaced them all with 3/8" flared nuts and bolts.

I resurrected a flooded 1999 Pontiac Firebird a decade ago. Pulled it out of a wrecking yard. The owner of the wrecking yard was a long time friend who knew I loved working on these style cars and asked if I thought I could save it. So...I took it home as well as another 99 Firebird he had in the lot that was still complete but hit HARD in the rear/totaled. I had to flush the motor, transmission, and rear differential. I had to replace the catalytic converters because they were stopped up. Electrically, I had to replace the BCM/body control module, a/c controls, power window motors, and the factory radio. I also swapped out all of the interior(seats, carpet, console, all plastic trim) except the dash. I did disinfect the car inside and out while I had all the interior removed. The car only had 39,000 original miles. Another friend of mine heard about me repairing the car and bought it from the dealer when I was done. My friend with the wrecking yard cut him a good deal on it and even paid me for the work I did. My friend still has the car today and it still runs like a champ. Only thing he's had to do is replace the power window motors again and the driver seat again(they are notorious of wearing out at the lumbar from people getting in and out of the car). As long as a vehicle is a freshwater flood and doesn't set too long you can most likely save it.

Get a bolt that's the same size as the bellhousing bolts but about an inch or so longer. With a cutoff wheel cut the head off the bolt. Then take the cutoff wheel and cut a slot in the untreaded end that will fit a flat bladed screwdriver. Now before you raise the trans screw the modified bolt into one of the lowest bellhousing holes in the block. Now you can slide the trans on to the stud for alignment (it works better if you make 2 studs.) Once you get one or two of the regular bolts in then you can use a screwdriver to unscrew the studs. BTW please ditch that side pipe on the Nova it's so lame!
