Well thank you all for watching, following along, and the comments throughout! The Hayduke was really an excellent experience from start to finish and we both very much loved our time out there. At some point I'll write up a big post on my website with more stats, data, and helpful information. Currently in this videos description I have my gear list and stats from our hike to start with. Goodluck to any future hikers and thank you

My wife and I just appreciated you taking us along with you on this trail. We are both long time residents of New Mexico and have loved hiking over the years including pieces of many of the long trails. We had not heard of the Hayduke but were amazed, truly at both of your accomplishments on this route. You make a great team and I must say that "sproket" is fearless. Maybe we will run into you on a trail some day. Thanks for your efforts to tell this story.

Thank you, James Jupiter H. Your video and commentary is A1. You conclude in Zion where I did technical canyoneering for some 25 years (& in many other spots) and then 4 yrs. ago had to 'stop' because of a major cancer operation. Speaking of cancer - skin cancer - I got NO mentoring in my teens, 20's & 30's when I did mountaineering and desert travel all over the West. Decades later, every 6 months I have cuts, burns and treatments re basal cell carcinoma. I've had part of my nose and ear cut off, I've had cuts on back, chest, legs and hands. For 15 years I hike with long pants, long shirt, cap with large bill and flaps that cover the ears; sometimes I wear a nose guard. I wear Patagonia fishing gloves that cover the top of my hands. The MD Dermatologists tell me that most of my skin damage was from long ago. You do an excellent job with your presentation, please protect you body and skin for the long term; cover up, so you don't have to go through what I & others did. I've friends that have had melanoma where big chunks of arms and legs were removed; & it can kill people. Skin cancer; basal cell, squamous cell & melanoma. Please I don't wish to be negative, I feel joyful for you, tremendous effort & achievement; you got a 'small peek" at Zion & have no idea what is behind the curtain in those wondrous technical canyons. What an accomplishment & sterling video & report.

Long sleeve light weight, warm weather shirts, Mountain Hardware. Long pants Gramicci; both very breathable . I've worn the MH shirts in the Maze in the spring & in Needles in the fall, & also in mountain travel. Long sleeve hooded zip poly (light weight) jackets are also often used, over the shirts or over a long sleeve poly zip shirt (as first layer). I've worn that on winter entries into the bottom of the Grand Canyon, along with a possible shell. This in an attempt to cover as much of the body as possible, from the sun.

Jamal! Thank you so much for all the helpful resources. Was fun to read all of your trip reports as we went. It was a joke for us throughout the entire trail that whenever we saw something even 'mildly' interesting that, "jamals been there". The hamburger rocks, to the many mushrooms, it seems like you've done them all! The route is far in a way much better with everything you've done for it. The extra choices in such excellent alternates, the history of the areas, and your own experiences. It's all excellent.

Wow! I think this is the best series of videos I've ever seen, best series of a long backpack, and the best "trail". String them altogether and you will have an amazing documentary that one of the big boys like National Geographic will want. Have you thought about doing that, making a 2 hour documentary that you could put on Netflix or one of the other streaming channels, or sell to National Geographic? Do you own the copyright once you put it on youtube or do they now own it? Major congrats to both of you for doing and finishing this amazing route, and major congrats on creating such a beautiful compelling video series of your adventure.

I used to watch your videos on my phone for gear review, how to be ultralight, etc. now i wait to watch on my big TV and surround sound speakers so i can be immersed in the landscape you show. Great job. As for a possible future video - it’s interesting you mention how Sprocket had to put up with your pickiness about camp site selection. I know you’ve talk about that before, but something to consider in the future is FILMING all camp site selection choices, what specifically you find inferior of some options compared to other. That’s a tricky skill to acquire and something you have to do every night anyway. Evan’s Backpacking filmed each and every tarp set up he did while on the AT, and it was instructive to see what he came up with. Just a suggestion/request. Great video.

Wonderful coverage of a very, very special part of the world, Jupiter. I'm reminded of the adage, 'Don't be sad that it's over, be happy that you did it'. I for one will be watching this series again and again, I suspect. I agree; I hope that future wise heads prevail and recognize that there is a need for some places on Earth to remain true wildernesses, so without inevitably-civilizing trails. I have come to understand why you have called the experience an idea, not even a route. It follows that the misnomer 'Trail' would be best deleted from the title, IMHO. It's more accurate to call it simply 'The Hayduke'. There are plenty of trails to challenge the vast majority of us. So there's a valid case to be made for preserving the aspirational, the almost-mythical, places like this as salves for the human spirit. Congratulations to you both from one who can only aspire.

It's been great following your journey. Can't wait to section hike it since I'm not able to take the time off to thru hike it. This provided a lot of very helpful information. Thank you! This is one of my favorite videos of the series cause I'm a southern Utah native and have been to many of the places in this video, including the mentioned Fat Man's Misery. Once you complete Fat Man's where it merges with Parunuweap Canyon, there's a plaque on the sandstone wall honoring John Wesley Powell, who explored that canyon. Fat Man's is a pretty fun canyon, and isn't actually miserable. 😅 It's unfortunate that the trail is closed down to Weeping Rock. That location just keeps getting more and more rock slides. Next time i would recommend one more short side trail that takes you to Observation Point. It has an excellent view all the way down Zion canyon. Hilldale and CO City really aren't as bad as those documentaries make it out to be. I've spent plenty of time in that area hiking and with work. They definitely have a unique way of life (polygamy) and have had their fair share of unfortunate events, and residents, but it's not a dangerous place. They have no affiliation with the "Mormon" church any longer and haven't for a long time. They broke off from the LDS Church because they wanted to continue with living a life of polygamy. There's a lot of confusion out there between the LDS and the FLDS churches. Another documentary, and book written by Jon Krakauer, is titled Under the Banner of Heaven.

I think there is another documentary on netflix called Keep Sweet and obey about the Fundemental Mormons out in colorado City. As a lifetime Southern Utah resident. It is nice to see where the hayduke eventually links up with Zion. This series has been lots of fun to watch! will probably never attempt until a more established trail emerges, but might try some sections in the future. Would love to celebrate with you next time you decide to do it. Ill definitely treat you to some Oscars and/or Escalante pizza for some trail tales.
@is65662 ай бұрын
Jupiter, Do you think this trail could be done in 1-2 day sections? For example, having a vehicle and a bike, stash the bike on a road close to the trail. After a day or two of hiking hop on the bike ride back to truck and and drive to the next bike-stashing location, and so on leapfrogging back and forth with the truck and the bike. Would this be feasible throughout this trail? Thanks!
@JupiterHikes2 ай бұрын
Many sections would be difficult to complete in that manner, as there often is not roads to ride back on, or you would not get close to that road in just a day or two of time. In some cases the hiking route is the most direct way, and you'd be spending much more time riding around on a bike to circumnavigate back to your car, than you did actually hiking the area. Some sections you could make it work, the trick however is figuring out where that would be feasible, and if you could even drive those roads with a normal vehicle to get to the trail to begin with. I can remember roads, and see roads on a map... but I don't think my car would make it very far down a lot of them.

Ha ha….anyone who knows Zion……my great-great grandparents owned the land in Zion. They had an operating lumber mill that eventually caught fire. The government came in with eminent domain and purchased the land for a very cheap amount (only the males of the family received money). There is a picture of my great-great grandparents (William Robinson and Cornelia Gifford Crawford) in the upper information center. My husband and I (from Texas) go there as often as we can because we love the area.
