WHISKY AND THE WILD

WHISKY AND THE WILD

Күн бұрын

Movie from trip to Jura in July 2019.
When wife and kids went for holiday abroad, I stayed in Scotland with our new family member - young black labrador Sofie. [I wasn't initially too happy to get a dog as I knew it will end up like this at some point..] After some time I spent working one of the really rare heatwave weather front hit Scotland for a few days.
I thought myself why we couldn't have a bit of holiday too?
And so we did, we went to explore island of Jura! And Jura distillery of course - my favourite! My plan was to stay overnight in three Jura bothies. Every night in different one.
Just me with a bike and the dog - ideal.
It was really tough though as there are no paths in Jura or just very few and not very good ones. It also was so hot and there was huge amount of 'lovely' horse-flies, midges, ticks and other insects ready for our blood anytime and anywhere:-]
On the other hand I have never seen anything more beautiful than a west coast of this island in my life! Scottish paradise! We were working hard with Sofie as a good team, made a strong bond and became best friends after this 5 days adventure. I will Never forget. Best holiday ever!!

Great video Jonas! I'm originally from Islay and been to Jura many times - usually to walk the hills. Camped but never visited the bothies. You've given me inspiration! Thank you! Happy trails buddy!

Just watched with the mrs and she hates hiking but we both loved your film. We have been to Jura distillery but not the bothys. What an adventure. Brilliant.

Great stuff! Brought back good memories of a walk up the west coast of the island and back down the east one hot July week. Yes, the biting insects and ticks were in huge numbers too! But the trip was brilliant.

Thank you. Ah, that had to be an effort I guess. I think May will be a good time of year. Weather may also be good, but will be less insects and lower brackens too..

Hi Kenny. I fancy doing the west coast up to the top bothy,What was the terrain /walking like, and how long a walk was it from Ruantallain to Glengarrisdale bothy? Hope not too many folks have seen this vid so I have the area all to myself :)

Hello Dave. I done one camp between Ruantallain and Glengarrisdale bothy and i was taking it fairly easy. Much of that stretch was surprisingly easy going on level dry grassy ground. Theres more up and down and high bracken the nearer i got to Glengarrisdale, as i remember. The roughest section is from there onwards, jonas captured it quite well on his vid. There would be less insects and bracken in Spring/early Summer, but maybe more folk choose to do it then, not sure. I only met two others, as i was leaving Glengarrisdale they were dropped off by boat at the beach to do work on the bothy. I didnt know about Ruantallain, it was just good fortune that it was an open bothy. It may mean more folk do the walk now, thats about 15 years ago i was there. Whatever, its worth doing and a memorable hike :)

@@MrSilverbirch May will be ideal i reckon, especially for the top of the island. Very interesting up there, lots of caves, wildlife, if wind and tide are right the sea turbulence is heard very clearly. Have a good one :)
