The reason they didn't hit permanent mainstream fame is Islamaphobia and racism. The message of their 2002 album is critical of the Bush Administration and discusses generational poverty, trauma, overpolicing neighborhoods the government flooded with drugs, and how the American people need to take up arms against the government before its too late. But unfortunately in that time criticizing Bush was a social death sentence. The Dixie chick's didn't get it as bad for obvious reasons, but as soon as it became public knowledge that anyone in this group was Muslim, it was over.

It's cool what one of the guys from Jurassic 5 said in that excellent "How to Rap'' book, about coming up with rhythms: "the vocal is an instrument in itself, I like to listen to other instruments in other songs for other cadences. It might be African rhythms, or I might take a horn riff..." Really good book, they had everyone involved in it, Jurassic 5, Pharcyde, Del, Dilated Peoples, Slum Village... lots of artists getting the respect they really deserve in that book.
