Putting fashion aside, your comment about ‘corridos’ is quite interesting. They started during the Mexican Independence era, and they were basically ways to portray the feats and adventures of the rebels and outlaws that were gaining recognition during the independence. As time when on, ‘corridos’ became part of the cultural identity of the country, gaining a lot of popularity during the Mexican Revolutionary Movement. The original ‘corridos’ can arguably be separated into three categories, 1) They talked about an important or famous person that did something remarkable, mainly outlaws, and the ‘corrido’ is a way to immortalize their story 2) About famous or notorious fights, usually involving someone dying, someone getting revenge for a broken heart, avenging a lover or a close friend, et al (mainly, important confrontations that were part of the local folklore) and 3) About horse races, which were an important part of the cultural context during the colonialism in Mexico. In simpler words, ‘corridos’ is a way of storytelling, extremely detailed (they provide names, dates, locations, and descriptions of the events). They are quite similar to what a Bard did in the Middle Ages in Europe. Unfortunately, during the last couple of decades, ‘corridos’ started to be used to talk about the heinous and inhumane things done by criminals, mainly those related to narcotraffic. Those are called ‘narcocorridos’ and they gained a lot of recognition from the public. The ones you refer to in the video are ‘narcocorridos’, they are extremely violent, and there are a LOT of people who find them distasteful and a shame to the real tradition of ‘corridos’. Sorry for the little letter I wrote, but I think there is a lot of richness in the tradition of ‘corridos’ and it is truly a shame that the only ones that get recognition are the violent ones that try to glorify such violent and inhumane actions.
