Thanks so much for this lesson! I got one doubt: "If you haven't got it already, download that book up there." ... Is this sentence correct? Can they (already and yet) be used interchangeably in this case? Thanks in advance! ;)
@oxfordenglishnow
@oxfordenglishnow 2 ай бұрын
The sentence "If you haven't got it already, download that book up there." is grammatically correct. However, using "yet" might be slightly more natural in this context. While both "already" and "yet" are grammatically correct in this sentence, "yet" is more commonly used in negative contexts and sounds more natural.

Hi Sarah, happy to enjoy your video lesson again. I wonder if the stress is on the first or on the second syllable in the word "participal".I often hear native speakers make stress on the first syllable whereas you make the second syllable stressed. Which is correct ? Thank you.
@oxfordenglishnow
@oxfordenglishnow 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Natalie, glad you enjoyed the lesson though probably too easy for you! As for the stress, it is on the second syllable parTICipal. You can check this by looking at an inline dictionary and they write the word phonetically like this, pɑr·t̬əˌsɪp·əl. The small mark under the « t », means stress. Hope that helps!

What is the order of still and have in modal perfects I still would have worded or I would still have worked or I would have still worked Wich is the correct formaly? I already would have worked or I would already have worked or I would have already worked Wich one is the correct formaly?
@oxfordenglishnow
@oxfordenglishnow 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Eduardo, So not to get back to you sooner! Still used with the present perfect means that something hasn't happened. We use it to emphasise that we expected the thing to happen earlier. Still (in this context) is only used in negative sentences. I've been waiting for an hour and the bus still hasn't come. They promised me that report yesterday but they still haven't finished it. She still hasn't replied to my email. Maybe she's on holiday. Still comes between the subject (the bus, they, etc.) and auxiliary verb (haven't/hasn't). Already used with the present perfect means 'before now'. We use it to emphasise that something happened before something else or earlier than expected. I've already spent my salary and it's two weeks before payday. He wanted to see Sudden Risk but I've already seen it. The train's left already! Already can come between the auxiliary and the main verb or at the end of the clause. Hope that helps!

Do people still teach that we only use still in negative sentences? ... I'm still waiting for an answer
@oxfordenglishnow
@oxfordenglishnow 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matteo, Sorry about the slow response. It is a very busy time of year! We use still as an adverb to emphasise that something is continuing: They have been together for 40 years and they are still very much in love. and in a negative clause: She bought a car two months ago and she still hasn’t taken any driving lessons. So my answer is that it can be used in both. Hope that helps!

Hey, have you already brushed your teeth? 🤔 Yeah, I've just finished actually 😁 Oh really, why can I still smell your bad breath? 😕 Which brands of toothpaste haven't you tried yet? Seems like nothing else of 'em will work for you 🤣

Hi NEJ19, some great sentences using just, yet, still and already, well done!! Just a tiny thing, in your last sentence you say, "Seems like nothing else of 'em will work for you." You should say, "Seems like none of 'em are working for you." Hope that helps! 🙏
