Matter does strange things under extreme pressure. It can collapse atoms down to neutrons and squeeze quarks together into strange matter. And if any of that strange matter should reach Earth... Yeah, we'd be screwed.

The universe is filled with strange things. But perhaps nothing stranger than the stuff at the core of neutron stars.
Gravity and pressure are responsible for everything we see around us. Because it's the pressure that fused together atoms in the core of stars that eventually produced the carbon, oxygen, and other elements that keep us and everything alive.
Much bigger stars went supernova, collapsing down under gravity and creating even heavier elements. Even bigger stars collapse down so far, they create a singularity, ripping a black hole into the fabric of the universe.
But there's a slightly smaller size of star that doesn't manage to go black hole, but does crush down the atoms of its core into neutrons, creating a neutron star, the densest objects in the universe.
But it doesn't stop there, because at the core of neutron stars, the up and down quarks that make up neutrons can fuse with each other to create a much heavier type of quark, a strange quark.
The strange matter that is made up of strange quarks has the ability to turn any other type of matter into strange matter. This means that if quark stars collide and explode, they could scatter bits of strange matter, or strangelets, across space. And if any of those strangelets were to collide with Earth, it could spell the end of our entire planet.

After watching this video I went and did a bit of research and I found out something about strange matter. Strangelets, over time, will decay to their ground state and become positively charged, and if it's charge is positive the conversion will not happen. This is because all atomic nuclei have a positive charge, so a strangelet would be electrostaticly repelled and never make direct contact with the nuclei, which is required for the conversion to start. (Also electrons are not affected because they are leptons and can not decay into quarks.)

Neutron star mergers are another source of trans-ironic matter. Supernova are still another source. I expect black hole accretion disks are going to be found to be yet another source. Either way, strange stars may soon be more than theoretical. You see, our nearest "Neutron Star" has a diameter of just 7km. The minimum possible size for a Neutron Star is 20km. So, our nearest "Neutron Star" is not made of Neutrons.... at least, not entirely (not nearer the center). No need to worry though... really! Take comfort from the fact that, to date, no planet or star has been observed turning into strange matter and most of them are much bigger targets than Earth, which has been here about 4.5 billion years. If there are bits of the stuff flying around out there, they must be very few and far between.

@@antonystringfellow5152 perhaps the reason we havent seen them... Is because we can't. If they are one step shy of a black hole, maybe the definition of a strange star should be a proto-black hole?

@@Lightning_Lance I don't think you understood me there, I'm not confused I'm just saying if strange matter could travel at the speed of light and the two neutron star's collision created a radiation burst and that radiation hit the earth and scientists were able to observe that, then strange matter would have came alone with that radiation as it travels at the same speed, but it didn't.

Sorry Joe, but the assumption that trans-iron elements are seeded throughout space by supernovae is largely viewed as obsolete by now. The nucleosynthesis and dispersion of heavy elements is much more likely to be linked to events involving neutron stars mergers. Sorry again for being THAT guy.
