As someone who played tuba all through middle/high school, these are exactly some of the "first impression" thoughts that run through your mind: the hilarity at putting on the massive instrument, the "what the heck" positioning of the mouthpiece, the absolute metallic fart noises that emerge from trying the first few noises, it's all here. Fantastic. 2:59 You know, on the topic, there was always an urban legend among tuba players that if you played a specific low note on tuba, it would arose a crocodile. Also not a zoologist, idk.

Just so you all know. The sousaphone was designed for the sole purpose of producing a similar noise to the tuba, while also being easier to carry while marching. By easier to carry I mean it sits on the shoulders and you can bear the weight easier, because these things can weigh up to like 20-25kg if you get full brass ones!

@@KGB.Official Haha. Yeah. Not being able to constantly see your right hand playing the melody is a small problem if you have to play the bass with some buttons you can only feel (with just around 3 distinguishable buttons) while also having to let the bellows "breathe" to determine volume and to even make any sound. I'm glad that I've been learning it since 2nd grade, almost 13 years now. It's so much fun and such a unique instrument.

The sousaphone (/ˈsuːzəfoʊn/ SOO-zə-fohn) is a brass instrument in the tuba family. Created around 1893 by J. W. Pepper at the direction of American bandleader John Philip Sousa (after whom the instrument was then named), it was designed to be easier to play than the concert tuba while standing or marching, as well as to carry the sound of the instrument above the heads of the band. Like the tuba, sound is produced by moving air past the lips, causing them to vibrate or "buzz" into a large cupped mouthpiece. Unlike the tuba, the instrument is bent in a circle to fit around the body of the musician; it ends in a large, flaring bell that is pointed forward, projecting the sound ahead of the player. Because of the ease of carrying and the direction of sound, it is widely employed in marching bands, as well as various other musical genres. Sousaphones were originally made of brass. Beginning in the mid-20th century, some sousaphones have also been made of lighter materials such as fiberbrass & plastic.

Thing about brass instruments is you have to train your lip muscles. When you first pick up a brass, realistically you've got about a three note range until you train your lips to be tighter. The valves do a lot less than you think. Like 90% of a trumpet's notes are open and first valve only (or second valve only depending on key).

This made me laugh so hard... What a good laugh, thank you. My older brother played sousaphone in marching band in high school and I would have to go to the shows, and I could never decipher what it sounded like... But it is quite an instrument visually! My favorite of your jams with it was when you were using it like a drum too haha. Very creative

The fact that people can walk for a mile carrying a third of my weight while keeping good enough breath support to play the sousaphone as well as they can astounds me. I mean, I can barely march a full parade with a clarinet and keep playing the entire time, let alone a freaking 50 pound instrument resting solely on my shoulder. I doubt I even have enough breath support to even somewhat play a tuba. My brother’s a baritone, and the one time he tried to upgrade to tuba he couldn’t play more than two measures before dying.

It gets worse, in British brass bands people just march with their normal tubas (generally with straps otherwise you’d die). It takes me like a week to recover from marching.

Honestly, weight of a Sousa isn't that big of a deal. Since it, y'know, wraps around you and rests on your shoulders, specifically designed to be carried. Plus Sousas often get more leeway in posture by directors. The worst, outside of people being forced to march concert tubas, is marching with Euphs. Most weight that doesn't come with a strap/shoulder carry, and you're generally held to a regard for posture more in line with the strictness of other higher brass. A baritone is whatever, but a compensating euph like some march with is HELL. -A former euph player, who also marched sousa+trumpet and commanded baritone+tenor sax and trombone.

@@cpMetis Can confirm. I own a stupid amount of instruments and have installed neotech brass slings on many. Upright style horns, like 99.99% of compensating Euphs, are the least ergonomic instruments possible. If it's 3+1, you have no actual grip. Even with a strap, the weight distribution is terrible. Best shape for the 9'Bb stuff is ovalform. You can just set your strap to where it's barely loose enough to reach the mouthpiece and the horn will just sort of sit there like some sort of wearable furniture. Too bad no one ever made an ovalform Eb Tuba, for whatever reason.

one of the main reasons it sounded bad was because he didnt fully build the neck. he left off the connector joint that makes it easier to put your mouth on the mouth piece. the most probable reason of sounding bad was strain in the neck witch in turn closes you throat up more. the entire key points of learning the instrument and sounding good at the same time is keeping your throat open and the corners of your lips tight.

I was in band in middle school (I played flute) and, I one time watched the trombone players clean out their instruments. They removed one of the pipes and liquid comes pouring out of it. The liquid was their spit that had accumulated inside the instrument after having played it for almost an hour. Suffice it to say, brass instruments tend to collect spit.

In Middle School, 6th to 8th grade, we used sousaphones as our marching band tubas. (They had flip up ones in HS.) The main thing that's bad about the sousaphone is it will bruise the shoulder you rest it on. Also, try carrying that 80 pounds for 5 to 7 miles, while playing occasionally.

Daniel has learned the art of tuba: Record enough of sounds on top, and you'll never notice the bad tone XD Welcome to the Tuba Family, Daniel. You're doing us proud.

Even though this is SO hilarious, I think Daniel should stick to the bagpipes. Also, the sousaphone was invented by John Philip Sousa, an American marching band conductor. (I'm a violinist)
