It’s an isolation transformer that does a ground lift. It eliminates ground loops. This happens because you have gear plugged into two different ground circuits. One ground might be at a higher electrical potential. This causes current to flow through the ground path to the lower ground potential, and that current causes a hum (ground loop).

@@GeorgeGarmash inductance attenuates high frequencies proportionate to the volume of said high frequencies. This is what gives the u87 it's iconic soft high-end, a transformer on the output ensures the high frequencies aren't harsh or over bearing. Galvanic isolation tends to have a similar effect on audio, though they are usually deployed in multiple pairs to reduce inductance.... Depending on the engineering, the effect could be drastic, or virtually non existent.

That's the beauty of an isolation transformer. A DI is typically a 10 to 1 ratio on the impedance, An Iso transformer is a 1 to 1 ratio, it physically uncouples the input to the output via a transformer.

Can't even imagine what recording would be like.. My guitars are shielded, I have humbuckers... STILL in some rooms the hum is so intense I can use the humbuckers to find the quiet spots and it's crazy I don't know much about this stuff either because I'm obviously learning So yeah can't thank you enough for making this video Happy I just stumbled upon this.

The hum completely vanished ! Cheapest and easiest method by far ! PS I didnt cut the mains ground cable ! I did it on the audio cables input ! The output audio is still grounded ! DS

@@Art-zs6sl I abhor hum and these boxes are must haves but you need to work methodically through your signal chain to identify where the hum is being introduced and then you experiment with placement of the hum eliminator. The first step is starting with no effect pedals to identify the baseline 60Hz hum coming from your guitar pickups so use the quietest setting. These boxes will not eliminate that kind of hum; only the type introduced by ground loops. I also find it useful to use a EBtech Hum X on the plug of my second amplifier to eliminate that ground loop.

Pricy, but they use good audio-transformers inside and the good ones are quite expensive. An audio-transformer is a 1:1 transformer that just transforms AC to AC with a ratio of one to one. You send 1V AC in and get 1V AC out. DC voltage does not get transformed. Normally the hum is caused by a so called ground loop. The ground is DC so it does not get through. The quality of the transformer dictates how linear your frequency response is. And the good ones are pretty expensive. That being said, they don't cancel all hum! They take care of the ground loop problem, which causes hum. Should the hum is already IN the signal, they won't help. Then you have to look one step back in your chain and trace down, where the hum is getting into the signal.
@hoboroadie4623
@hoboroadie4623 2 жыл бұрын
I think that the Ebtech is the least expensive device that I run for this. Usually I run Little Labs Redeyes that have lots of features but they are three times the money. I don't have any way of comparing transformers in the din and hubbub of what I do, but I don't have any ground differences that I can hear.

QUESTION- (related to using the LLS with a subwoofer) .......... I have both Ebtech & morely (small box model) Line level shifters. The Line level shifters not only 'shifts' / convert the signal but also get rid of hum, so 2 in one. It's also been said they handle down to 10Hz -- If I remember correctly. ... My question for you or whoever wants to answer.. - (I'm not an expert on levels and power / signal etc but..)- ...Can the Line Level Shifter be used with a Home Theater receiver, from RCA output ' LFE .1 signal ' - to the Line Level Shifter - then output Balanced signal via XLR - to a Subwoofer with Balanced XLR INPUT....??? -- Would there be any issue with this. -- I understand I'd need an RCA-Male(to connect to the receiver LFE output, and a TS 1/4" connector to connect to the Line Level Shifter, and obviously and XLR cable. -- I've contacted Morely about this, I'm waiting for a response. -- I Would try this scenario out, but I worry it may be risky or something(as I said I'm not an expert.. I've only used the LLS with studio monitors, not a HTR sub).... let me know if you have any input on this... reply. Thank you :) Side note: I thought about getting a Jensen Transformer, the SUB one to convert Unbalanced to Balanced and all that comes with the quality of Jensen Transformers, but I don't know - In comparison to the Ebtech / Morely. The price difference is huge.. and both are passive. I Don't know if the Jensen one would add higher output to the signal going to the sub. -KGUN

If you have a guitar that picks up EMI/RF signals even with Furman power conditioners,and isolated pedal power supplies with amps and pedals, same outlets different outlets and you know for a fact it comes from the computer because it gets louder the closer you are. Even if it's on the floor. What is the solution? I'm debating using USB over ethernet with all my USB devices to see if that will kill the USB ground loop and the guitar from interacting with the internal PC components. Otherwise other options are DI with ground lift. USB hum isolation adaptors.USB powered hub?, Changing out PC and motherboard power supply. Enclosing the PC in an all metal chasis. Dedicated PCI-E USB expansion card? All this costs money. Have you experienced pickups picking up EMI and RF from the PC. It's not in my speakers, it's from the pick ups exclusivley most Notably heard when using high gain distortion with pedals or amps. Equally I know the USB connectors transmit noise because my Line 6 pod go is impossible to use from Any single USB port as it translates PC noise through the USB wire itself. What is the solution? Sure I could be much further away, but then all my devices require longer USB cables and longer patch cable runs which is inconvenient when you are the performer and engineer controlling everything. Regardless the pod go cannot be used with my pc for direct recording through the USB. My other audio interfaces and pedals are dead quiet with regular preamp hiss/hum with the guitar completely disconnected. As soon as it's connected you get all kinds high pitch computer noises. Some of it can be noise gated out, but still creeps through the signal underneath during performance. Again I'm using isolated pedal power connections high quality patch cables, and Furman power conditioners. Things like ISO hum elimators that go between your audio equipment like those made by morely Will not work with my particular use case as it's not generated or caused by anything but the guitar being in the same room with the PC itself. Exclusively picked up by the pick ups. And in the case with the pod go which is also a computer from the USB port in the PC to the pod. The noise is there in this case even with the guitar disconnected . So the PC generates noise exclusive with some devices through the USB port alone. However also the guitar interacts with the internal components to create digital PC noise, as well as 60 cycle Hum In some cases. Oddly enough the guitar connected directly to my main audio interface a steinberg UR28M using PC amp sims does not seem to pick up these digital noises. Add amps or pedals and the guitar in proximity with the PC seems to be the issue even with power filtering and isolated pedal power supplies. Ethernet over USB would allow me to have the PC much further away and still be able to connect all my periphals. However I do not know if it will cure my USB ground loop with connecting a device like the pod go so it's Usable without these computer generated sounds that happens. Or if entry or pro audio cards will function correctly. So I'm going to try the Hum Extractor + G by ISP. Otherwise do you have any other thoughts?

@@kennethc2466 Don't you know? The vast majority of guitar players are scared shitless of a soldering iron. Just the very idea of being near one is enough to make most reach for their wallet and pay a solder jockey vast amounts of money to do all the soldering for them.

I'm curious if the EHX Hum Debugger would be a better choice for killing the hum on a pair of Lollar P90's. I'm in Canada and they're both about the same price. Seems you like the EHX... does it affect the tone by much... and in what way? Thanks.🎸✌😉

@@GlennMichaelThompson A Soundman friend who worked w national groups made a direct box w all top grade components including the transformer. There was an op amp out as well as the transformer out. We all agreed the tranny sounded best , despite being flat response thru out the spectrum , so there shouldn't be a difference. Of course cheaper trannys do roll off highs , so I'm curious as well if it just adds some undefined magic or makes it sound darker.

If I run my Fender Deluxe Reverb & Marshall Origin20 tube head in the same circuit (plugged into the same "plug") I get a horrendous hum. So loud it isn't playable. The "plug" is a dedicated line from my breaker box into a quad in my studio. If I run the Fender into a wall plug and Marshall into the quad, or vice versa, no hum. SO . . . I bought one of these hum eliminators. It made ZERO difference. ??? I used it between my pedal board and the two amps. A/B box: Out 1 into IN 1, Out 2 into In 2. Then into the two amps. I was hoping to use both amps in performances, using an A/B switch. But I doubt I'll be able to find 2 separate power sources at most gigs. You usually just get what you get. NOTE: The dedicated quad is on its own breaker. The wall plus is an OLD plug, and is not grounded. So I had to use a ground lift 2 prong adapter to plug the Fender into the wall plug. And I don't want to do that. So for now . . . I can't use both amps in rehearsal. Any thoughts appreciated.

I mean it’s almost a ten-fold markup. I’d be happy to pay 75-100 bucks for it but 220 is a bit much.

I think the same about boutique pedals. Why pay $200 for a modded tubescreamer when I can mod one myself. But you try and tell that to people and they will look at you like you are the Anti-Christ. (cough The Gear Page cough). Most guitar players fear the soldering iron and they like the idea of paying out of their nose for things that can make them feel exclusive. You ain't got one? Plebe! Also, don't forget the bragging rights.
