how does the challenging work exactly on a draw 4

If the player who played the draw 4 could have played another card instead (e.g. you played a draw 4 on a yellow but you had a yellow in your hand and could have played that instead), and someone challenges it, then the cards get given back to the person who played it. So basically, the safest time to play it, is when you can't play any other card and have nothing else to play. It's hard to explain so I'm sorry if this was confusing and I hope this helped.
