All the instruments nicely executed. Being a guitarist, I keyed in on the guitar comping which has good feel but also movement and choice of chord inversions and their partials. Guitarist makes select passage and use of minimal movements to accent and lead into each change - a good study, if only for coping the style of these players. Who are these cats - where are they from?

Uh yeah so in order to identify a key correctly you Must look at the beginning and the End of the tune. This tune starts on the IV and finally resolves to the I at the end. In this example, the song is in G the first part of the tune just happens to start on C. Think about it. Example if we play a ii-V-I. Are we in the key of the ii or the key of the I. Exactly, the example cadenced to the I just like this song cadences ( very obviously) to G not C at the end of the tune.

That can be a puzzling question, and I would have to say it is phrased incorrectly - the ii cord is only a passing chord to the V, which is the leading chord to the I chord of the 125. The examples in this tune, the I chord of the 125 becomes a tonal center within the key of the tune, GMaj in this case, and only momentarily - it is considered changing key centers - not a modulation. In this case, I don't see any modulations outside of the key - as long as the ii - V's resolve to the fundamental harmonies of the tunes key (G -Am-Bm-C-D-Em-F#dim), then all the changes are in the key of the tune, in this case the key of G. The Bbm7 to Eb7 would of course suggest that there is going to be a modulation outside the key to an Ab, but the actual resolution is to a ii -V of the root cord, so it is just a hint. The A7 would be a borrowed dom7 I think or a sub-dominate that does not resolve to a I chord. There is a classical definition for this, but it escapes me - too long since college music school. Somebody out there that is up on their classical harmony please remind me. BTW whenever you are playing a II - V - I the tonality is not the ii but rather the I of that 251 - the ii is only incidental to the V and was hardly ever added by the older original composers of the Standards - if the player wanted to add it, he could do on his own volition - it was the more recent versions of the old standards that the ii was added, like done in the Real Books. Confusing, ugh? Theory is that way for sure
