Id fly to the UK from the NZ to just hear these in person honestly as we had the same motor traction sounds on the ganz-mavag EMUs here from the 1980s (im 26 now) but they phased them out 2010+ and when I listened to this sound or videos of the ganz-mavag it would unlock core memories of my dad taking me on the trains as a kid. I work in I.T now but honestly been considering lately looking into becoming a train driver instead as I spend all my time in train sims

Until a couple of years ago on a quiet evening I could hear the 455s from my house as they travelled along the Chessington branch. Glad they still retain a decent sound. Always interesting being in the power car on a damp or frosty morning. Sometimes I'd get the 5.40 from Worcester Park, you could hear the traction motors spin up as the wheels lost adhesion on the rails. It would be a struggle all the way to Raynes Park, where it joined the main line and the route was more well used. The stretch between Epsom and Leatherhead is interesting, quite busy with both SWR and Southern services. I can still hear the hum of 3rd rail DC trains in the quiet evenings from where I live now. Only difference is they're 507s and 508s. Not going to be the same on SWR when the 701s take over, shame to say goodbye to the 455s, 456s, 458s, and 707s. The power car on a 455 is quite distinctive. Not only is it the underslung equipment, the bogie design is different to. It's of a heavier construction and has more dampers on it.

Yes - I always head to the motor coach! I too will be very sad when the units get replaced

@@timtube1663 Me to. I liked the sound of traction motors working. I'm the same on buses. My favourite was the X2, I'd take it from Kingston to Heathrow. Mercedes Citaro. A lovely sounding engine and a smooth gearbox. Loved hearing the gear change.

Doh, I meant the X26 between Kingston and Heathrow. The X2 is where I live now, it links Preston and Liverpool.

@@THREE3.3.3 On a 455 there is only one motor coach / power car, with both bogies powered. It's one of the intermediate coaches. The driving cars at each end are trailers, with a trailer and a power car inbetween them. Easiest to spot on the 455/7s. They have a driving trailer, an ex 508 trailer, power car, driving trailer formation. 455s are like the old 4VEPs and 4CIGs, they had a single power car inside the formation, it was the vehicle with the guards compartment in it.

This sounds like the class 455 that almost deafened my ears that one time. Sometimes the motors are kinda busted and make more noise than usual. But their still cool to hear

these types of motors are my fav sounding, way more so than the gear change sounding UFO ones imo

Same , I wish they had more powerful motors though, I.e had the same motors as the 317s. then had vossloh traction modifications on top of that. It would be a super fast old unit if that were the case.

I've done that route from Dorking up to London on a clear summers day with no mist and it looks completely different. Almost like the south of France!

Firm believer that 1960s-1980s were the panicle of traction motor sounds after that they got too quiet and too complicated
@williamhuang83092 жыл бұрын
This is probably the only example of a class of train which has had its traction converted from DC to AC and retaining its lovely motor sounds. The post-CLIP 1992 London Underground stock sound awful as they inherit the screechy motors of the S-stock.
@timtube16632 жыл бұрын
Agreed! These motors sound just as good. I'm thinking a lot of the noise must come from some non-helical gearing. Either way, I'm glad these are clinging on. Sadly, since the video was made the Southern units are no more....
