The song and comedy series were both written and created by John Sullivan, who also directed the series. John Sullivan wrote the theme music for all the comedy series he created. The most well-known being Only Fools and Horses. The only reason Sullivan didn't sing the tune was because Paul Nicholas was a popular singer with many hits who wanted to get into acting and this was his first opportunity, which made him famous world-wide.

can't believe that this didn't chart
@MALONEYCAMFIELD Жыл бұрын
I can. It didn't really fit into the '80s music scene, it sounds a bit like a romantic ballad from the 1940s. Plus, Paul Nicholas' pop star days were already over by this time, he'd had a few hits in the '70s. Maybe if he'd got his old mate David Bowie to sing it, it might have stood more of a chance of charting.
@stewartmcrae8007 Жыл бұрын
@@MALONEYCAMFIELD and this is by far the best of all of his songs the fact that it didn't chart is insane
@MALONEYCAMFIELD Жыл бұрын
@@stewartmcrae8007 It's a sweet little song, but to get in the charts it probably would have needed to get on the Radio 1 and commercial radio playlists, and I don't think it ever stood much of a chance against Duran Duran and Wham! etc, which were on the playlists at the time. It wouldn't be considered poppy or rock enough, it would have been considered too old-fashioned musically I think.

This version seems off to me. The orchestral backing is intrusive and sometimes fights Paul's voice, which isn't high enough in the mix. It's like he's trying to sing quietly because he doesn't want to disturb anyone in the next room. His delivery is also quite mannered, and he comes in late at 1:12. On the whole, it's a decent song, sounding like a late '70s Neil Diamond or Barry Manilow album track (though Nicholas is easily a better singer than Diamond). Too sleepy for a single, though, and lacks a proper chorus.
